Smoking History

Smoking history is a structured account of a person’s tobacco exposure, including the products used, amount, duration, and current or past use, and it supports clinical risk assessment. Clinicians collect this information by asking about smoking patterns, quit attempts, exposure to secondhand smoke, and age at initiation, then may estimate cumulative exposure in pack-years by multiplying packs smoked per day by years of smoking. In medicine, these data help identify risks for respiratory, cardiovascular, and cancer-related disease, guide screening and diagnostic decisions, inform perioperative planning, and support individualized cessation counseling and treatment.

Constrained by limited energy and resources, organisms must compromise between offspring quantity and parental investment. This trade-off is represented by two primary reproductive strategies; K-strategists produce few offspring but provide substantial parental support, whereas r-strategists produce much progeny that receives little care. These strategies are related to an organism’s survival likelihood across its lifespan, which is represented by a survivorship curve. Three general types of...

Scientists record evolutionary history by analyzing fossil, morphological, and genetic data. The fossil record documents the history of life on Earth and provides evidence for evolution. However, both fossil and living organisms offer evidence that outlines Earth’s evolutionary history.Phylogenetic trees illustrate the evolutionary relationships among these organisms. Scientists infer organisms’ common ancestry by evaluating shared morphological and genetic characteristics. Together, the fossil...

Comparing the Effects of Electronic Cigarette Vapor and Cigarette Smoke in a Novel In Vivo Exposure System

This protocol describes a method for exposing rodents to electronic cigarette vapor (E-vapor) and cigarette smoke. Exposure chambers are constructed by modifying anesthesia chambers with an automated pumping system that delivers E-vapor or cigarette smoke to rodents. This system can easily be modified to accommodate many experimental endpoints.
