Swallowing Obstruction

Swallowing obstruction is a blockage or narrowing that prevents food, liquid, or saliva from passing normally through the throat or esophagus, making it an important medical concern because severe cases can compromise nutrition, hydration, or the airway. The obstruction may result from a lodged foreign body or food bolus, inflammation and swelling, scar-related narrowing, or a mass, and it disrupts the coordinated movement of material from the mouth into the stomach. Clinical evaluation uses symptoms, physical examination, and, when needed, imaging or endoscopy to identify the site and cause, guide removal or treatment, and prevent complications such as aspiration, tissue injury, or recurrent blockage.

2014

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.
