Targeted Prostate Biopsy

Targeted prostate biopsy is a diagnostic technique that samples suspicious areas of the prostate identified through imaging, most commonly multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), rather than relying only on systematic tissue sampling. During the procedure, MRI findings guide needle placement through cognitive targeting, MRI-ultrasound fusion, or in-bore MRI guidance, allowing clinicians to collect cores from a defined lesion. In medicine, this approach helps characterize prostate abnormalities, detect clinically significant prostate cancer, and inform treatment planning. It can complement systematic biopsy and may improve sampling of suspicious lesions while limiting unnecessary cores from less likely areas.

Here, we present a standardized protocol for detecting prostate cancer using stimulated Raman histology (SRH) on biopsy samples due to advantages over traditional histopathology, focusing on sample preparation, imaging, and artificial intelligence to improve the cancer-to-tissue ratio. Additionally, it supports biobanking for transcriptomics, organoid or xenograft models, and identification of intraoperative surgical margins.
