Ventricular Waveform

A ventricular waveform is the pattern of electrical activity generated as the heart’s ventricles depolarize and repolarize, typically represented on an electrocardiogram (ECG). It includes the QRS complex, which reflects rapid ventricular depolarization and contraction, followed by the ST segment and T wave, which represent early recovery and ventricular repolarization. Clinicians analyze the waveform’s timing, shape, amplitude, and rhythm to assess conduction through the His–Purkinje system and identify abnormalities such as arrhythmias, bundle branch blocks, ischemia, or ventricular hypertrophy. Understanding these features supports diagnosis, treatment selection, and monitoring in cardiovascular medicine.

Effective Value of a Periodic Waveform

2024

The concept of effective value, the root mean square (RMS) value, is crucial in understanding electrical circuits and power delivery. This idea emerges from the necessity to measure the effectiveness of a voltage or current source in supplying power to a resistive load. The effective value of a periodic current represents the direct current (DC) that conveys the same average power to a resistor as the periodic current itself. This concept is crucial when assessing AC circuits. To determine the...

Patient-specific Modeling of the Heart: Estimation of Ventricular Fiber Orientations

Cited by 14 •

2013

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

This article describes a rat model of electrically-induced ventricular fibrillation and resuscitation by chest compression, ventilation, and delivery of electrical shocks that simulates an episode of sudden cardiac arrest and conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The model enables gathering insights on the pathophysiology of cardiac arrest and exploration of new resuscitation strategies.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Assessment of Right Ventricular Function in the Piglet

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) and Right Ventricular (RV) dysfunction were induced in piglets by progressive obstruction of the pulmonary arteries. Consequences were remarkably similar to those observed in CTEPH patients. This animal model would be a very useful tool for pathophysiology and therapeutic experiments on CTEPH and RV failure.
