Vessel Density

Vessel density is a measure of the number or total length of blood vessels within a defined area of tissue, providing information about vascular architecture and blood supply. It reflects processes such as angiogenesis, vessel remodeling, and tissue perfusion, and researchers commonly estimate it from histological sections or medical images by identifying and quantifying vessel profiles. In medicine, vessel density helps characterize normal and diseased tissues, including tumors, ischemic lesions, and retinal disorders, where changes may indicate altered oxygen delivery, disease progression, or response to treatment. Standardized measurement can support diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluation of therapies that affect the vasculature.

Stability of Floating Vessels

2023

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...

Isolating Mouse Brain Vessels: A Protocol to Isolate Intact Vessels from Murine Brain Sample

2025

This video demonstrates the isolation of intact vessels from a mouse's brain that constitute the blood-brain barrier (BBB) along with neurons and glial cells. The isolated vessels can be used as an in vitro model to study their role in maintaining brain homeostasis.

We are presenting an in vivo assay to test blood vessel permeability. This assay is based on intravenous injection of a dye and subsequent visualization of its diffusion into interstitial spaces.

Density Gradient Ultracentrifugation

2023

Density gradient ultracentrifugation is a common technique used to isolate and purify biomolecules and cell structures. This technique exploits the fact that, in suspension, particles that are more dense than the solvent will sediment, while those that are less dense will float. A high-speed ultracentrifuge is used to accelerate this process in order to separate biomolecules within a density gradient, which can be established by layering liquids of decreasing density in a centrifuge tube. The...
