Vessel Detection Algorithm

A vessel detection algorithm is a computational method for identifying blood vessels in medical images, helping clinicians and researchers visualize vascular structure and assess disease. It typically processes image intensity and contrast, then uses vessel-like shape, tubular geometry, connectivity, and scale information to distinguish vessels from surrounding tissue and suppress noise. In medicine, these algorithms support angiographic analysis, retinal screening, surgical planning, and quantitative measurement of vessel diameter, density, or branching patterns. By improving reproducibility and reducing manual tracing, automated detection can strengthen image-based diagnosis, treatment assessment, and longitudinal monitoring while providing computational foundations for advanced vascular modeling and clinical decision support.

(2019)This video demonstrates the procedure for using photoacoustic imaging to observe changes in the cortical vessels of an anesthetized rat. The process includes baseline imaging, dye injection, and analysis of dye absorption and clearance during wash-in and wash-out.

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...

Operation of High-pressure Reactor Vessels

Robert M Rioux, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The use of gases in a synthetic chemistry laboratory is essential for carrying out a variety of highly facile and atom economical transformations. Reactions such as hydrogenation, oxidation, and amination require the use of gases like hydrogen, oxygen, and ammonia. Due to the poor solubility of these gases in typical reactant solutions, high pressures are necessary to achieve a meaningful reaction rate. Not only are these gases...
