National Defense

National defense is the organized protection of a country’s territory, population, institutions, and sovereignty against external threats, making it a major public-sector function. In microeconomic terms, defense behaves largely as a public good: individuals cannot easily be excluded from its protection, and one person’s security does not substantially reduce another’s, while governments allocate scarce labor, capital, and tax revenue under uncertainty and weigh opportunity costs. Microeconomic analysis helps assess defense procurement, military readiness, deterrence, and the effects of defense spending on firms and households, including spillovers such as innovation and employment, as well as trade-offs with health, education, and other social priorities.
