Raw Materials

Raw materials are basic natural or agricultural inputs, such as metals, fossil fuels, timber, and crops, used to produce goods and services. In microeconomics, their value and allocation emerge through interactions between supply and demand: availability, extraction or harvesting costs, technology, input substitutability, and market conditions influence prices and firms’ production decisions. Changes in raw-material markets can affect marginal costs, consumer prices, resource allocation, and the competitiveness of industries. Studying these inputs helps explain commodity markets, production constraints, supply shocks, and how businesses and policymakers respond to scarcity, environmental limits, and changing demand.
