Dental Adhesive Fixation

Dental adhesive fixation is a technique that bonds restorative or orthodontic materials to tooth structure, creating a stable interface while helping preserve natural tissue. The process typically conditions enamel or dentin, applies an adhesive system, and uses resin polymerization to form micromechanical interlocking and, in some systems, chemical bonding with the tooth substrate. This approach supports the placement of composite restorations, veneers, sealants, and orthodontic attachments, while influencing bond strength, durability, marginal integrity, and resistance to moisture-related failure. Understanding these mechanisms is important for improving clinical outcomes and evaluating biomaterials in dental and neuroscience-related research.

Adhesion

Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules. Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow glass...
