Early Postnatal Transplantation

Early postnatal transplantation is the placement of cells, tissues, or neural progenitors into an organism shortly after birth, when the nervous system is still developing and may support repair or circuit formation. After transplantation, grafted cells can survive within the host tissue, respond to local developmental signals, migrate or differentiate, and establish synaptic connections with existing neural networks. In neuroscience, this approach helps researchers examine neural development, cell integration, and mechanisms of brain repair, while providing experimental models for studying neurological injury and evaluating cell-based regenerative strategies.

Challenging young neurons in new brain regions can reveal important insights into how the environment sculpts neuronal fate and maturation. This protocol describes a procedure to harvest interneuron precursors from specific brain regions and transplant them either homotopically or heterotopically into the brain of postnatal pups.
