Exercise Frequency

Exercise frequency is the number of exercise sessions performed over a defined period, such as a week, and it is a key variable when studying how physical activity affects the nervous system. Repeated exercise can increase physiological signals linked to brain function, including changes in cerebral blood flow, neurotransmitter activity, and neuroplasticity, while the spacing of sessions influences recovery and adaptation. In neuroscience research, measuring frequency alongside intensity and duration helps clarify relationships between exercise patterns, cognition, mood, stress regulation, and brain health. This framework supports behavioral studies and more precise recommendations for maintaining neurological function across the lifespan.
