Female Preference Testing

Female preference testing is a behavioral neuroscience method used to measure which social, sensory, or reproductive cues females favor and how those preferences relate to brain function. In controlled experiments, researchers present animals with alternative stimuli or partners while recording choices, investigation time, approach behavior, or other measurable responses under defined conditions. These assays help identify the sensory signals, motivational processes, and neural circuits that influence mate choice and other social decisions. By linking observable behavior with neural activity, hormones, or experimental manipulations, female preference testing supports research on communication, sexual selection, learning, and the biological regulation of behavior.

A fundamental aspect of assessing the welfare of animals in captivity is to ask whether the animals have what they want. Here, we present a protocol to determine housing preference in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) with respect to the presence/absence of environmental enrichment and access to flowing of water.

Topical Testing Assay: A Technique to Evaluate the Insecticidal Potential of Dopamine Receptor Antagonists on Adult Female Mosquitoes by Topical Application

In this video, we demonstrate the topical testing assay to determine the toxicity of a potential insecticide on adult female mosquitoes. Using a dopamine receptor antagonist that causes lethal inhibition of neurotransmission in mosquitoes, this method describes a way to evaluate the toxic effects of insecticides upon topical application.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in mice differ depending on age, sex, condition, and genetic background. Using two ultrasound emitters broadcasting simultaneously in different locations, this two-choice test can evaluate murine recognition and preference responses to different characteristics of USVs.

We present a simple and unbiased olfactory test in mice. With this protocol olfactory discrimination, preference, avoidance and sensitivity to a novel odor as compared to water can be assessed in single behavioral sessions. This method is indicated for a single experimenter and analysis is based on computer-assisted video processing.
