Limited Bedding Nesting

Limited bedding and nesting is an early-life adversity paradigm that models impoverished, unpredictable caregiving environments in developing rodents, making it useful for studying how early-life conditions shape the brain. During a defined postnatal period, researchers reduce the amount of nesting and bedding material available to the dam and litter, which can alter maternal behavior, fragment care, and increase variability in infant stimulation. Neuroscience studies use this manipulation to examine effects on stress-responsive systems, neural circuit development, sensory processing, and later cognition or emotional behavior. Because its intensity and timing can be controlled, the paradigm supports investigation of mechanisms linking early adversity with enduring neurobiological and behavioral outcomes.

Burrowing, nesting, and hoarding are species-typical activities that mice readily perform in the laboratory. This article describes how they can be easily and cheaply assessed. These protocols are extremely sensitive to mouse strain, brain lesions and diseases. Moreover they constitute “environmental enrichment” for the mice, and embody the “Refinement” aspect of the “3 Rs”18.

We demonstrate the utility of nest building behavior in laboratory mice as an indicator of welfare. Nest scoring is a sensitive technique that is altered by temperature, illness, and aggression. The time to integrate into nest test (TINT) is a simple cage-side assessment that can detect postoperative pain.

Capillary Beds

2024

Capillary beds are networks of tiny blood vessels that play a crucial role in the circulatory system. These beds are where the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products occurs between the blood and surrounding tissues. Each capillary bed consists of numerous capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels in the body, typically only one cell-thick. This thinness allows for the efficient diffusion of substances. Capillaries connect arterioles, small branches of arteries, to venules,...

Single and Two-phase Flow in a Packed Bed Reactor

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA The goal of this experiment is to determine the magnitude of maldistribution in typical packed bed reactors in both single phase and two-phase (gas-liquid) flow and evaluate the effects of this maldistribution on pressure drop. The concepts of residence time distribution and dispersion are introduced through the use of tracers, and these concepts are related to physical...
