Organ Bath Technique

The organ bath technique is an ex vivo method for studying how isolated organs or tissue preparations respond to drugs, neurotransmitters, and physiological stimuli under controlled laboratory conditions. A tissue sample is suspended in oxygenated physiological solution maintained at a defined temperature and pH, while a force transducer or other sensor records changes in contraction, relaxation, or electrical activity after experimental manipulation. In neuroscience, this approach helps characterize receptor function, synaptic signaling, and neurovascular or neuromuscular responses without the complexity of a whole animal. By enabling precise concentration-response measurements, organ baths support pharmacological screening and investigation of mechanisms underlying nervous system function.

Glassware in Organic Chemistry There are standard pieces of glassware that are used in the organic chemistry lab. Beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks are typically used for simple mixing or to hold solvents but they should not be used to measure volume, unless only an approximate volume is needed. Glassware can be divided into the following categories: Volumetric Glassware – This includes glassware such as graduated cylinders, volumetric glass pipettes, and volumetric flasks. The purpose of these...

A Technique to Establish a Bacterial Infection Model in an Ex Vivo Organ Culture

This video demonstrates a method to establish an infection model in placental tissues to study infection propagation. An ex vivo placental organ culture is infected with Listeria monocytogenes, a facultative intracellular parasite. The bacteria invade extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) to enter the placental tissue and then propagate to other cells via cell-to-cell spread.
