Rodent Surgical Procedure

Rodent surgical procedures are controlled operative techniques used to access, modify, or evaluate tissues in mice and rats, providing essential tools for neuroscience research. Under anesthesia and aseptic conditions, researchers use carefully planned incisions, tissue handling, and, when needed, stereotaxic positioning to target specific brain regions while limiting injury and physiological stress. These procedures support studies of neural circuits, behavior, injury, and disease by enabling interventions such as tissue sampling, device placement, or localized experimental manipulation. Standardized technique, monitoring, and postoperative care improve animal welfare, data quality, and reproducibility, making rodent surgery central to experimental neuroscience.

Preoperative ManagementThe primary goals of preoperative management in kidney transplantation are to optimize the patient’s metabolic state and prepare them for surgery through diet adjustments, necessary dialysis, and tailored medical treatment. This phase also involves comprehensive infection screening and patient education about the surgical procedure and postoperative care to improve outcomes and adherence.Medical ManagementA comprehensive evaluation is required for both the living donor...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Preoperative Preparation The initial assessment should include observation of alertness, posture, gait, and grooming behavior, as changes in these parameters may indicate underlying health issues. Body weight should be recorded...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...
