Rubber Electrodes

Rubber electrodes are flexible, electrically conductive interfaces that connect neural tissue or the skin to recording and stimulation equipment, combining mechanical compliance with electrical function. Typically, an elastomeric matrix contains conductive materials that carry electronic signals, while contact with tissue supports ionic-to-electronic charge transfer; contact impedance and electrode placement influence signal quality. In neuroscience, rubber electrodes can support electroencephalography, neural signal recording, and electrical stimulation, particularly when conformability and comfort are important. Their flexibility may improve contact with curved or moving surfaces, enabling wearable neurophysiology and contributing to the development of soft, durable interfaces for brain research and neurotechnology.

The Rubber Hand Illusion

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Reaching for objects, walking without hitting obstacles, landing on a chair as you sit (instead of falling to the floor), these and all our physical actions depend on an ability to perceive our own bodies in space, to know where our limbs are relative to one another and relative to the rest of the world. One way that the human brain encodes this information is called proprioception, the brain relies on its own control and feedback...

We demonstrate how an objective measure can be employed in the widely employed rubber hand illusion paradigm. This measure is obtained by modifying the well-established crossmodal congruency task. This task allows the investigation of multisensory processes which are critical for modulations of body representations as in the rubber hand illusion.

Standard Electrode Potentials

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an established technique to modulate cortical excitability1,2. It has been used as an investigative tool in neuroscience due to its effects on cortical plasticity, easy operation, and safe profile. One area that tDCS has been showing encouraging results is pain alleviation 3-5.
