Simultaneous Recording

Simultaneous recording is a neuroscience method for measuring activity from two or more neural signals, cells, brain regions, or physiological channels at the same time, preserving their temporal relationships. It works by acquiring signals through multiple electrodes, imaging detectors, or sensor types under a common timing reference, then aligning the resulting traces to compare coincident events, response latencies, and interactions. This approach helps researchers link neuronal activity to behavior, examine communication across circuits, and integrate electrical, optical, and behavioral measurements in the same experiment. By revealing correlations and timing that sequential measurements can miss, simultaneous recording supports studies of network dynamics, sensory processing, disease mechanisms, and neural interventions.

2014

Simultaneous extracellular long term recordings from two different brain neuropiles or two different anatomical tracts were established in honeybees. These recordings allow the investigation of temporal aspects of neuronal processing across different brain areas at the single neuron as well as at the ensemble level in a behaving animal.

Procedures are described to perform simultaneous recordings of membrane potential or current and changes of intracellular calcium concentration. Suprachiasmatic nucleus neurons are filled with the calcium indicator bis-fura-2 using a patch clamp electrode in the whole cell patch clamp configuration.

Source: Jensen, V. N., et al. Repeated Measurement of Respiratory Muscle Activity and Ventilation in Mouse Models of Neuromuscular Disease. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the method for recording simultaneous plethysmography and electromyography signals in a freely moving ALS mouse model. The procedure involves using implanted electrodes and a transmitter to capture muscle activity, alongside a plethysmography chamber to monitor breathing patterns, to investigate the role of...
