Anesthetic Concentration

Anesthetic concentration is the amount of an anesthetic present in a delivered mixture, tissue, or biological fluid, and it helps determine the intensity and duration of anesthesia. As concentration rises, more drug reaches molecular targets in the central nervous system, typically increasing neuronal inhibition and producing a concentration-dependent progression from analgesia or sedation to unconsciousness and, at excessive levels, physiological depression. Pharmacologists use concentration-response relationships, potency measures, and monitored effect-site levels to compare agents and guide dosing. Understanding anesthetic concentration supports inhalational anesthesia, intravenous drug development, experimental pharmacology, and safer control of surgical immobility, pain, and vital functions.

Concentration Cells

A concentration cell is a type of a voltaic cell constructed by connecting two almost identical half-cells, both based on the same half-reaction and using the same electrode, differing only in the concentration of one redox species. A concentration cell's potential, therefore, is determined only by the concentration difference of the particular redox species. Consider the following voltaic cell: From the given information, the cell potential of this concentration cell can be calculated using...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Concentration DependenceExpand In this experiment, you will combine varying concentrations of aqueous HCl and sodium thiosulfate to make solid sulfur, which rapidly gathers into opaque yellow particles at a certain sulfur concentration. Since the reaction solution starts clear and colorless, you can easily tell when it reaches that concentration. You'll use the same test tube and total volume each time, so it will take the same amount...

Chemical Kinetics and the Reaction Rate Law Chemical kinetics refers to the rate or speed of a chemical reaction. The rate depends on the mechanism, complexity, and number of reactants in the reaction. Reactant concentration also plays a significant role in the rate of a reaction. The rate law quantifies this relationship through experimentation. Each reactant contributes to the speed of the reaction by a factor known as the reaction order. This factor can range from zero to two, and it depends...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology A solution is a homogeneous mixture containing some components in small amounts, called solutes, and one component in a large amount, called the solvent. Solid-liquid solutions contain one or more solid solutes dissolved in a liquid solvent. Solutions are ubiquitous in chemistry: they are used to store and handle small amounts of material, carry out chemical reactions, and develop materials with controllable properties.

Inhalational Anesthetics: Overview

Inhalation anesthetics are drugs that induce general anesthesia upon inhalation. They work by increasing the sensitivity of GABAA receptors or inhibiting NMDA receptors, leading to a decrease in central nervous system activity. The depth of anesthesia can be rapidly adjusted by changing the concentration of the inhaled gas. Some common examples of inhalational anesthetics include volatile liquids like isoflurane, desflurane, sevoflurane and gases like xenon and nitrous oxide. Isoflurane, a...
