Stool Softeners

Stool softeners are medications that ease bowel movements by increasing the water content of stool, making them useful in the pharmacologic management of constipation when straining should be minimized. Most commonly, docusate acts as a surfactant that lowers stool surface tension, allowing water and lipids to penetrate the fecal mass and soften it as it passes through the colon. Unlike stimulant laxatives, stool softeners generally do not directly trigger intestinal contractions, so their effects may be gradual. Pharmacology studies examine their routes of administration, therapeutic uses, onset, adverse effects, and appropriate role in patient care.
