Corneal Current Mapping

Corneal current mapping is a biophysical method that measures and spatially resolves electrical currents at the corneal surface, revealing how the tissue maintains its electrical state and responds to injury. Ionic transport across the corneal epithelium creates extracellular currents and voltage gradients; sensitive microelectrodes or related probes detect these signals at multiple locations to construct a spatial map. The resulting measurements help characterize epithelial barrier function, wound-related bioelectric signals, and changes in cellular activity during healing. In physics and biomedical research, corneal current mapping connects ion transport with tissue behavior and may support studies of ocular disease, repair mechanisms, and therapeutic strategies.

2015

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is the only conservative treatment currently available to halt keratoconus progression by improving the biomechanical rigidity of the corneal stroma. The aim of this manuscript is to highlight the methods of three different protocols of CXL: conventional CXL (C-CXL), accelerated CXL (A-CXL), and iontophoresis CXL (I-CXL).

2012

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.

Neovascularization (NV) of the cornea can complicate multiple visual pathologies. Utilizing a controlled, alkali-burn injury model, a quantifiable level of corneal NV can be produced for mechanistic study of corneal NV and evaluation of potential therapies for neovascular disorders.

Laser-assisted Selective Ablation of Porcine Corneal Endothelial Cells: A Technique to Induce Focused Porcine Corneal Endothelial Injury for Ex Vivo Studies

2025

This video demonstrates a non-invasive laser-assisted procedure to selectively damage the corneal endothelial cells in the porcine eye. The developed ex vivo model of endothelial cell damage can be used to study diseases of the corneal endothelium.
