Dielectric Strength Air

Dielectric strength of air is the maximum electric field air can withstand before electrical breakdown, making it a key measure of gaseous insulation in physics and high-voltage systems. When the field becomes strong enough, free electrons accelerate between air molecules, causing ionization through collisions and an electron avalanche that forms a conductive plasma path, producing a spark or arc. The breakdown field depends on pressure, electrode spacing, temperature, humidity, and electrode shape, as described approximately by Paschen’s law for uniform gaps. Understanding dielectric strength helps engineers design insulation, spark gaps, circuit breakers, and safe clearances in power, atmospheric, and laboratory applications.

Capacitor With A Dielectric

2023

Parallel plate capacitors consist of two conducting plates separated by a certain distance. However, it is mechanically difficult to hold the large plates parallel to each other without actual contact. Hence, a dielectric layer is commonly placed between the plates, which provides an easy solution for holding the plates together with a small gap and increases the capacitance of the capacitor. Dielectrics are non-conducting materials with no free or loosely bound electrons. When a dielectric is...
