Gravity Force

Gravity force is the attractive interaction between objects with mass, shaping motion from falling bodies on Earth to the orbits of planets and satellites. In classical physics, its strength increases with the masses involved and decreases with the square of the distance between their centers, as described by Newton’s law of universal gravitation; in a field model, mass produces a gravitational field that acts on other masses. Studying gravity force helps explain weight, projectile motion, tides, planetary systems, and spacecraft trajectories. It also provides a foundation for testing more advanced descriptions of gravity, including general relativity.

Internal Forces and Center of Gravity

Internal forces and the center of gravity are fundamental concepts in mechanics, playing a crucial role in understanding the behavior and stability of structures and objects under various conditions. A comprehensive understanding of these principles is essential for engineers, architects, and designers to create safe and efficient systems. Internal forces are generated within a body due to the interaction between its particles. These forces can be categorized into tension, compression, and...

Gravitropism: Plant Responses to Gravity Higher plants sense gravity using statocytes, cells found near the vascular tissue in shoots, and in the root cap columella in roots. Statocytes contain starch-filled organelles called statoliths. The statoliths settle, or sediment, at the bottom of the statocyte in the direction of gravity. Statolith sedimentation triggers a signaling cascade, resulting in the asymmetrical distribution of the plant hormone auxin across root and shoot tips. This...

Center of Gravity

The center of gravity (COG) of an object is the point where the object's total weight is considered to be concentrated. Knowing the location of the center of gravity is useful when predicting the behavior of a moving object or designing static structures. In a uniform gravitational field, the center of gravity is similar to the center of mass (COM); yet, these two points can be positioned differently. For example, the Moon's center of mass lies very close to its geometric center, but its center...

Work Done by Gravity

Gravitation is one of the four fundamental forces in nature. The force between objects on Earth and Earth itself is called gravity. Like other forces, gravity does work on an object if it displaces it toward the Earth's center. In this case, the work done by gravity is said to be positive. If an external force acts on the object against the pull of gravity and manages to lift it away from the Earth's center, work is done against gravity. In this case, the net work done is said to be negative.

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA The goal of this experiment is to understand the components of force and their relation to motion through the use of Newton's second law by measuring the acceleration of a glider being acted upon by a force. Nearly every aspect of motion in everyday life can be described using Isaac Newton's three laws of motion. They describe how objects in...
