Gray Cast Iron

Gray cast iron is a ferrous alloy containing carbon and silicon, named for the gray fracture surface created by graphite within its iron matrix. During solidification, carbon separates as graphite flakes, which interrupt the metal’s continuity and influence its hardness, strength, brittleness, damping capacity, thermal conductivity, and machinability. These structure–property relationships make gray cast iron useful for engine blocks, machine-tool bases, brake components, and other parts that require dimensional stability and vibration absorption. In physics and materials science, it provides a practical example of how composition, phase formation, microstructure, and defects determine a material’s mechanical and thermal behavior.
