Series Parallel Circuits

Series parallel circuits are electrical networks that combine series and parallel connections to control how current and voltage are distributed among components. In a series section, the same current flows through each component while the total voltage is divided; in a parallel section, components share the same voltage while current divides among available paths, allowing the circuit’s equivalent resistance and behavior to be analyzed systematically. Studying series parallel circuits helps students apply Kirchhoff’s laws, Ohm’s law, and resistance rules to predict circuit performance. These principles support the design, troubleshooting, and optimization of systems ranging from laboratory circuits to household and industrial electrical networks.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment demonstrates how current is distributed in resistors connected in series or parallel, and thus describes how to calculate the total "effective" resistance. Using Ohm's law, it possible to convert between the voltage and current through a resistance, if the resistance is known. For two resistors connected in series, (meaning that they are wired one after the...

Series and Parallel Capacitors

Capacitors, fundamental components in electronic circuits, can be connected in series and/or parallel configurations. Each configuration has different impacts on the overall behavior of the circuit. First, consider capacitors connected in series to a battery. In this configuration, the plate connected to the battery's positive terminal develops a positive charge, while the plate attached to the negative terminal becomes negatively charged. An equal magnitude of charge is induced on the other...

Series and Parallel Inductors

In electrical circuits, integrating inductors into the toolkit of passive elements requires navigating the intricacies of series and parallel combinations involving these components. Practical circuits often feature configurations of multiple inductors, and understanding how to determine their equivalent inductance is vital. For a series connection of N inductors, each carrying the same current, applying Kirchhoff's voltage law unveils a crucial relationship. Substituting the expression for...

Capacitors in Series and Parallel

Multiple capacitors connected serve as electrical components in various applications. These multiple capacitors behave as a single equivalent capacitor, and its total capacitance depends on the capacitance of individual capacitors and the type of connections. Capacitors can be arranged in two - orientations, either in series or parallel connections. Suppose the capacitors are connected one after the other such that the negative terminal of the first connects to the positive terminal of the...

Street lamps equipped with RLC surge protectors are an excellent example of applying circuit analysis in practical scenarios. These surge protectors safeguard the lamp's components against sudden voltage spikes. A simplified parallel RLC circuit model with a DC input source generating a step response is employed in this context. When the switch is turned on, Kirchhoff's current law is applied, leading to a second-order differential equation. Interestingly, this equation's solution comprises...
