Solar Wind

Solar wind is a continuous stream of electrically charged particles, mainly protons and electrons, flowing outward from the Sun and shaping conditions throughout interplanetary space. It originates in the hot solar corona, where high temperatures allow particles to escape the Sun’s gravity; carried by the Sun’s magnetic field, this expanding plasma forms the heliospheric environment and varies with solar activity. In physics, studying the solar wind reveals how plasmas and magnetic fields transfer energy, while measurements support models of space weather. Its interactions with planetary magnetospheres produce auroras and can disrupt satellites, communications, navigation systems, and power infrastructure on Earth.

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Today's modern world requires the use of a large amount of energy. While we harness energy from fossil fuels such as coal and oil, these sources are nonrenewable and thus the supply is limited. To maintain our global lifestyle, we must extract energy from renewable sources. The most promising renewable source, in terms of abundance, is the sun, which provides us with more than enough solar energy to fully fuel our...

2018

Two 'Combined Stress test with in situ measurement' setups, which allow real-time monitoring of accelerated degradation of solar cells and modules, were designed and constructed. These setups allow the simultaneous use of humidity, temperature, electrical biases, and illumination as independently controlled stress factors. The setups and various experiments executed are presented.

Three-Winding Transformers

Three identical single-phase transformers can be configured to form a three-phase transformer connection, which involves high-voltage and low-voltage windings. The high-voltage windings are denoted by capital letters A-B-C, while the low-voltage windings are labeled with lowercase letters a-b-c, representing their respective phases. This notation helps distinguish between the high and low voltage sides of the transformer. In the per-unit equivalent circuit of a grounded Y-Y three-phase...

With solar energy as the driving force, a novel adsorption refrigeration system has been developed and experimentally investigated. Water vapor and zeolite formed the working pair of the adsorption system. This manuscript describes the setup of the experimental rig, the operation procedure, and the important results.

Turbulence Sphere Method: Evaluating Wind Tunnel Flow Quality

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA Wind tunnel tests are useful in the design of vehicles and structures that are subjected to airflow during their use. Wind tunnel data are generated by applying a controlled air flow to a model of the object being studied. The test model usually has a similar geometry but is a smaller scale compared to the full-sized object. To ensure accurate and useful data is collected...
