Face Management

Face management is the set of interpersonal strategies people use to preserve, protect, or repair face, the socially recognized image of competence, autonomy, and belonging. In interaction, individuals monitor threats to their own or another person’s face and adjust communication through politeness, indirectness, apologies, explanations, or other forms of conflict management. These strategies help regulate embarrassment, disagreement, and relationship dynamics, while their effectiveness depends on cultural norms, roles, and situational expectations. In psychology, studying face management clarifies how people negotiate identity and social approval in everyday conversation, counseling, teamwork, and cross-cultural interaction, with implications for reducing conflict and improving communication.

2017

Spatial patterns of soil erosion and deposition can be inferred from differences in ground elevation mapped at appropriate time increments. Such changes in elevation are related to changes in near-surface soil carbonates. Repeatable methods for field and laboratory measurements of these quantities and data analysis methods are described here.
