Flooding Therapy

Flooding therapy is an exposure-based psychological treatment that confronts a person with a feared object, situation, memory, or bodily sensation at high intensity rather than introducing it gradually. It matters because it can weaken avoidance, a behavior that often maintains anxiety and restricts daily functioning. During treatment, a clinician helps the person remain in contact with the trigger without escape or safety behaviors, allowing new learning that distress can be tolerated and anticipated catastrophe may not occur, although anxiety reduction is not required for learning. Flooding has been used for phobias, panic, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and trauma-related fears, but its intensity requires careful assessment, informed consent, and skilled supervision.

Responses to Drought and Flooding

2020

Water plays a significant role in the life cycle of plants. However, insufficient or excess of water can be detrimental and pose a serious threat to plants. Under normal conditions, water taken up by the plant evaporates from leaves and other parts in a process called transpiration. In times of drought stress, water that evaporates by transpiration far exceeds the water absorbed from the soil, causing plants to wilt. The general plant response to drought stress is the synthesis of hormone...

Source: Hassan, J. A., et al. High-Throughput Identification of Resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato in Tomato using Seedling Flood Assay. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates a method to screen for bacterial resistance in different tomato strains using ten-day-old seedlings inoculated with a bacterial suspension. It explains how bacteria invade through stomata, deliver effector proteins to suppress plant immunity, and how plant responses differ between susceptible and resistant...

Design Example: Analyzing Capacity Contours for Flood Risk Assessment

2025

Flood risk assessment involves careful planning and analysis to ensure the safety of communities near water retention structures. Capacity contours are a vital tool in this process, as they illustrate the potential spread of water at specific levels in a given area. In the context of building a bund across a small valley, these contours play a critical role in evaluating the safety of nearby residential areas. In this example, the bund is intended to store stormwater in the valley. The engineers...

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...
