Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) are independent oversight bodies that review and monitor research involving live vertebrate animals, helping protect animal welfare and promote ethical, scientifically justified studies. Before work begins, an IACUC evaluates the research protocol, species and number of animals, housing and handling procedures, potential pain or distress, humane endpoints, and investigator training, while applying the principles of replacement, reduction, and refinement. In psychology, this review supports responsible studies of learning, memory, behavior, and cognition by requiring that expected scientific value justify animal use and that researchers minimize harm through appropriate procedures and ongoing monitoring.

Basic Mouse Care and Maintenance

2023

Mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents that breed and sexually mature quickly, making them perfectly suited to generating large animal colonies for biological research. As compared to other mammalian species, mice are simple and inexpensive to maintain in the laboratory. Nevertheless, mouse colonies do have specific husbandry needs that are critical to preserving animal health and safety as well as experimental reproducibility. This video demonstrates standard practices that ensure mice are...

Blood Collection in a Pig Model

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood collection is a common procedure in swine research and clinical studies. The choice of sampling site depends on the animal's age, body size, the volume of blood required, the study objectives and approved IACUC...
