Semantic Anomaly

Semantic anomaly is an unexpected or implausible meaning relationship that disrupts how people interpret language, making it useful for studying cognition and comprehension. It occurs when a word, phrase, or sentence conflicts with the semantic expectations created by its surrounding context, requiring the reader or listener to revise the developing interpretation and allocate additional processing effort. Psychologists use semantic anomalies in sentence-judgment tasks, reading experiments, and event-related potential studies to examine contextual integration, prediction, and the neural timing of language processing. This approach also helps characterize how meaning is handled in conditions involving language or cognitive impairment.

Language: The N400 in Semantic Incongruity

2023

Source: Laboratories of Sarah I. Gimbel and Jonas T. Kaplan— University of Southern California Understanding language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans are capable of. Given the incredible amount of possible choices when combining individual words to form meaning in sentences, it is crucial that the brain is able to identify when words form coherent combinations and when an anomaly appears that undermines meaning. Extensive research has shown that certain scalp-recorded...

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.

2014

Using event-related EEG potentials (ERPs), we investigate the effects of antipsychotic medications on abnormal semantic brain activations in healthy individuals with schizotypal traits. We use ERPs to track distinct changes in brain activity, shedding insight into the cognitive processes associated with semantic categorization.
