Question 1

Why is hot wire anemometry useful for measuring turbulent flows?

Accepted Answer

Hot wire anemometers have very short time-response capabilities, allowing them to resolve rapid velocity fluctuations characteristic of turbulent flows. Their small size minimizes impact on the measured flow, and they can be made thin enough to avoid significantly disturbing the fluid being studied while capturing fast-changing velocity data.

Question 2

How does a hot wire anemometer relate velocity to electrical power?

Accepted Answer

The anemometer wire is electrically heated so convective cooling from the fluid balances the Joule heating. Since convective cooling rate depends on fluid velocity, a relationship between electrical power input and flow velocity is established. This principle allows the device to infer velocity from the power required to maintain constant wire temperature.

Question 3

What is the role of a Wheatstone Bridge in constant-temperature anemometry?

Accepted Answer

The Wheatstone Bridge circuit maintains constant wire temperature by detecting resistance changes. When fluid velocity changes, the wire resistance shifts, unbalancing the bridge. The resulting bridge voltage is amplified as a feedback signal to adjust current through the wire, restoring balance and keeping temperature constant for accurate velocity measurement.

Question 4

Why is the vena contracta of a free jet used as a reference flow for calibration?

Accepted Answer

The vena contracta provides a well-characterized reference flow where mean velocity can be precisely determined from fluid density and pressure differential. This known velocity reference allows engineers to collect multiple data points across different flow rates, enabling least-squares regression to establish accurate calibration constants for the anemometer.

Question 5

What calibration constants are determined from hot wire anemometer testing?

Accepted Answer

Calibration involves plotting voltage squared versus velocity raised to the 0.45 power, then performing a least-squares linear fit. The slope and intercept from this fit become the calibration constants specific to that anemometer. These constants allow the device to convert measured bridge voltage into actual velocity values in subsequent flow experiments.

Question 6

How is hot wire anemometry applied in industrial ventilation systems?

Accepted Answer

Engineers use hot wire anemometers to measure and control flow rates in exhaust lines handling different contaminants. By positioning dampers and adjusting flow while monitoring anemometer readings, they ensure each line achieves the pre-estimated velocity needed to efficiently eliminate its specific contaminant at the required rate.

Question 7

What are the key advantages of hot wire anemometry for boundary layer research?

Accepted Answer

Hot wire anemometry enables laboratory assessment of boundary layer flows relevant to aerodynamic design, naval engineering, and power generation. Its ability to capture detailed velocity data in wind tunnel settings helps researchers study complex phenomena like roughness effects, density gradients, and compressibility that remain incompletely understood in boundary layer mechanics.
