Question 1

What is the main focus of developmental neurobiology research?

Accepted Answer

Developmental neurobiology explores how a few early embryonic cells transform into an intricately organized nervous system. Scientists study how cells take on specific identities, migrate to defined regions, and connect to form functional networks. Understanding these processes is crucial for comprehending nervous system function and treating neurological diseases rooted in abnormal development.

Question 2

How did nerve growth factor contribute to understanding neural development?

Accepted Answer

In the 1950s, Rita Levi-Montalcini and Stanley Cohen discovered that tumor transplants onto chicken embryos caused rapid neuron growth. They identified the responsible protein as nerve growth factor, or NGF, which is essential to neuron survival. This landmark finding revealed how secreted substances regulate neural development and established NGF as a critical developmental signal.

Question 3

What role does the neural crest play in nervous system development?

Accepted Answer

The neural crest is a highly migratory group of cells that gives rise to mature peripheral nerves. Nicole Le Douarin demonstrated this by replacing chick embryo parts with quail tissue and tracking quail cells through development. This work revealed how specific cell populations migrate during development to form distinct nervous system structures.

Question 4

What are the key questions developmental neuroscientists investigate today?

Accepted Answer

Modern developmental neuroscientists study patterning and fate specification, examining how stem cells differentiate into neurons or glia. They investigate cell migration, axon guidance, and synaptogenesis—the formation of new signaling connections between cells. Researchers also explore how secreted signals and extracellular environment cues influence neural development and cell organization.

Question 5

How does in utero electroporation help researchers study brain development?

Accepted Answer

In utero electroporation delivers exogenous DNA into developing rodent brains by injecting DNA into embryonic tissue and applying electrical current to force it into surrounding cells. This technique allows researchers to promote or prevent specific gene expression, enabling examination of individual proteins' impact on brain development. It provides direct access to intact developing neural tissue for genetic manipulation.

Question 6

Why is explant culture useful for studying neural cell migration?

Accepted Answer

Explant culture involves dissecting small pieces of brain or spinal cord and culturing them in vitro, making tissue highly accessible for time-lapse imaging of cell movements. Researchers can easily apply growth factors or pharmacological inhibitors to study how specific molecules affect migration. This approach preserves tissue organization while allowing detailed observation of developmental processes.

Question 7

How can immunohistochemistry reveal mechanisms of synapse formation?

Accepted Answer

Immunohistochemistry uses antibodies to mark specific proteins in cells and tissues with high specificity. Fluorescent microscopy visualization of protein localization helps researchers form hypotheses about how molecules influence synapse formation and function. This technique enables quantification of synaptic proteins and assessment of synaptogenesis under different experimental conditions.
