A double template-assisted fabrication method for making surface patterns with tunable lattice geometries on a polymer surface is reported. This technique is based on a locally nonuniform strain produced in a double-templated polymer film that has a strong modulation in thickness. It can produce all 2D primitive Bravais lattices as well as chains on the surface of a polymer. The lattice parameters are controllable with nanoprecision by varying the direction and amount of the applied strain.

Controlled strain on a double-templated textured polymer film: a new approach to patterned surfaces with bravais lattices and chains.

Thymosin alpha 1 (Talpha1) has therapeutic potential in the treatment of infectious diseases and cancer. However, the exact molecular pathways for Talpha1 action are not fully understood. We found that Talpha1 induces the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, and IL-12 in murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) through IKK and MAPK pathways. Talpha1 triggers the activation of AP-1 and the phosphorylation of JNK and p38. Inhibition of p38 impairs IL-6 production in response to Talpha1. Further, TRAF6 is involved in the activation of JNK and IRAK4 is involved for the activation of IKK and PKCzeta in a Talpha1-induced system. Loss of IRAK4 largely blocked induction of IL-6. Thus, our studies define early signal events that are critical for the Talpha1-induced immune responses.

Signaling pathways leading to the activation of IKK and MAPK by thymosin alpha1.

The intricately regulated differentiation of the somatic follicle cell lineages into distinct subpopulations with specific functions plays an essential role in Drosophila egg development. At early oogenesis, induction of the stalk cells generates the first anteroposterior (AP) asymmetry in the egg chamber by inducing the posterior localization of the oocyte. Later, the properly specified posterior follicle cells signal to polarize the oocyte along the AP and dorsoventral (DV) axes at mid-oogenesis. Here, we show that lethal(2)giant larvae (lgl), a Drosophila tumor suppressor gene, is required in the follicle cells for the differentiation of both stalk cells and posterior follicle cells. Loss-of-function mutations in lgl cause oocyte mispositioning in the younger one of the fused chambers, due to lack of the stalk. Removal of lgl function from the posterior follicle cells using the FLP/FRT system results in loss of the oocyte polarity that is elicited by the failure of those posterior cells to differentiate normally. Thus, we provide the first demonstration that lgl is implicated in the formation of the initial AP asymmetry and the patterning of the AP and DV axes in the oocyte by acting in the specification of a subset of somatic follicle cells.

Proper patterning of the follicle cell epithelium over the egg chamber is essential for the Drosophila egg development. Differentiation of the epithelium into several distinct cell types along the anterior-posterior axis requires coordinated activities of multiple signaling pathways. Previously, we reported that lethal(2)giant larvae (lgl), a Drosophila tumor suppressor gene, is required in the follicle cells for the posterior follicle cell (PFC) fate induction at mid-oogenesis. Here we explore the role of another two tumor suppressor genes, scribble (scrib) and discs large (dlg), in the epithelial patterning.

Activation of JNK signaling links lgl mutations to disruption of the cell polarity and epithelial organization in Drosophila imaginal discs.

ZnO:Al thin films with Al incorporation of 0-20 at.% were deposited through the sol-gel technique. Such a film undergoes a significant microstructure development, from columnar to granular structures and then nanorod arrays with increasing Al content. The important role of Al incorporation level in the microstructure evolution was determined using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. At low Al level, the transition from columnar to granular grains can be attributed to the coarsening barrier resulting from the introduction of Al into the matrix. However, oriented structures of ZnO nanorod arrays are formed at a high Al level. TEM investigation reveals that a nanorod with smooth morphology at the top and rough morphology at the bottom has a single-crystalline wurtzite structure, which is the aggregation of nanoparticles of a few nanometers in size formed through the orientation attachment mechanism followed by epitaxial growth on the aggregated particles. Finally, the physical properties of the ZnO films with different degrees of Al concentration are discussed. Such detailed microstructure studies may aid the understanding of the doping effect process on the growth of a film, which is essential to altering its physical or chemical properties.

Microstructure evolution of zinc oxide films derived from dip-coating sol-gel technique: formation of nanorods through orientation attachment.

This paper presents a novel method for fabricating an ordered array of metallic nanoshells with a controllable shape by a combination of a porous polymer template and a nanocrystal-seeded electroless plating technique. The morphology of hollow particles has a strong dependence on the seed-deposition time onto the surfaces of the original colloidal template. Using this method, ordered Pt nanobowls (bowl-shaped shells) and, alternatively, nanocups (cup-shaped shells) are prepared. These materials show some intriguing properties: (i) reduced symmetry of the building blocks; (ii) a well-ordered structure; and (iii) a high ratio of surface area to volume, all of which are useful in many areas such as catalysts, sensors, and photonic crystals.

Antireflective surfaces are often realized by minimizing the refractive index contrast between the air and substrate using subwavelength microstructures. In this paper, we introduce another kind of geometry-induced antireflective surface using multireflection to suppress reflection to a very low extent. This surface is composed of micro-∧-shape array with the wedge size much larger than the wavelength of the incident light. Simulation and experimental results show that the micro-∧-shape array can effectively suppress the reflection within wide incident angles and large wavelength ranges. The enhanced light adsorption caused by the greatly increased light path length within the micro-∧-shape array is responsible for the antireflection phenomena. Such antireflective surface may find various applications, in solar cells, for example.
