Variation in fruit morphology is a prevalent characteristic among cultivated tomato. The genetic and developmental mechanisms underlying similarities and differences in shape between the fruit of two elongated tomato varieties were investigated. Fruit from two F2 populations constructed from either Solanum lycopersicum cv. Howard German or cv. Banana Legs crossed with S. pimpinellifolium accession LA1589, and one BC1 population constructed with S. lycopersicum Howard German as the recurrent parent, were analysed for shape by using a new software program Tomato Analyzer. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling 15 individual shape attributes were mapped by both single and multitrait composite interval mapping in each population. In addition, principal components analysis and canonical discriminant analysis were conducted on these shape attributes to determine the greatest sources of variation among and between the populations. Individual principal components and canonical variates were subjected to QTL analysis to map regions of the genome influencing fruit shape in the cultivars. Common and unique regions, as well as previously known and novel QTLs, underlying fruit morphology in tomato were identified. Four major loci were found to control multiple fruit shape traits, principal components, and canonical variates in the populations. In addition, QTLs associated with the principal components better revealed regions of the genome that varied among populations than did the QTL associated with canonical variates. The QTL identified can be compared across additional populations of tomato and other fruit-bearing crop species.

Morphological variation in tomato: a comprehensive study of quantitative trait loci controlling fruit shape and development.

Variation de la morphologie des fruits est une caract&#xE9;ristique fr&#xE9;quente chez les tomates cultiv&#xE9;es. Les m&#xE9;canismes g&#xE9;n&#xE9;tiques et de d&#xE9;veloppement qui sous-tendent les similitudes et les diff&#xE9;rences de forme entre le fruit de deux vari&#xE9;t&#xE9;s de tomates allong&#xE9;es ont &#xE9;t&#xE9; &#xE9;tudi&#xE9;s. Variation in Obst Morphologie ist ein vorherrschende Merkmal unter den angebauten Tomaten. Die genetischen und Entwicklungsst&ouml;rungen Mechanismen Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Form der Frucht zwei l&auml;ngliche Tomaten-Sorten wurden untersucht. Fr&uuml;chte aus zwei F2-Populationen, die aus beiden Solanum Lycopersicum CV Howard Deutsch oder CV-Banane-Beine gekreuzt mit S. Pimpinellifolium Beitritt LA1589 und einem BC1 mit S. Lycopersicum Howard Deutsch als wiederkehrende Eltern, gebaut gebaut wurden f&uuml;r Form mit ein neuen Softwareprogramm Tomaten Analyzer analysiert. La variaci&#xF3;n en la morfolog&#xED;a del fruto es una caracter&#xED;stica frecuente entre tomate cultivado. Los mecanismos gen&#xE9;ticos y de desarrollo que subyacen a las similitudes y diferencias en la forma entre el fruto de dos variedades de tomate alargadas fueron investigados. Fruto de dos poblaciones F2 construidas a partir de cualquiera de Solanum lycopersicum cv. Howard alem&#xE1;n o cv. Piernas de banano se cruz&#xF3; con S. pimpinellifolium adhesi&#xF3;n LA1589, y una poblaci&#xF3;n BC1 construido con Howard S. lycopersicum alem&#xE1;n como el padre recurrente, se analizaron para la forma mediante el uso de un nuevo programa de software Analizador de tomate. Loci de caracteres cuantitativos (QTL) el control de 15 atributos de la forma individuales fueron asignadas por la asignaci&#xF3;n de intervalo de los dos individuales y multirrasgo compuesto en cada poblaci&#xF3;n. Adem&#xE1;s, el an&#xE1;lisis de componentes principales y an&#xE1;lisis discriminante can&#xF3;nico se llevaron a cabo en estos atributos de la forma de determinar las principales fuentes de variaci&#xF3;n entre y entre las poblaciones. Los componentes individuales y principales variables can&#xF3;nicas fueron sometidos a an&#xE1;lisis de QTL a las regiones del mapa del genoma de influir en la forma del fruto en los cultivares. Regiones comunes y &#xFA;nicos, as&#xED; como QTLs previamente conocidos y novedoso, morfolog&#xED;a fruta subyacente en el tomate fueron identificados. Cuatro principales loci se encontraron para controlar m&#xFA;ltiples rasgos la forma del fruto, componentes principales, variables can&#xF3;nicas y en las poblaciones. Adem&#xE1;s, QTLs asociados con los componentes principales revela mejor las regiones del genoma que var&#xED;an entre las poblaciones que se los QTL asociados con variables can&#xF3;nicas. El QTL identificados se pueden comparar entre las distintas poblaciones adicionales de tomate y otros frutales especies de cultivo.
