Control of plant invasions requires regional knowledge of invasive species' distribution and the factors that promote their spread. We studied the distribution of invasive alien plants in Denmark at 2 spatial scales ("site" and "municipality") based on habitat descriptions and species lists from 2343 sites recorded within environmental assessments for planned infrastructure projects and conservation management. We created a Geographic Information System database of the sites and supplemented the field data with information on traffic routes, water courses, and socioeconomic indicators from the respective municipalities. The percentage of invaded sites within a municipality decreased with increasing tax percentage and it increased with (sub-)urbanity. The number of invasive species at the sites was positively correlated with resident plant diversity, disturbance, and proximity to traffic routes. We conclude that current plant invasions in Denmark are mainly an anthropogenic (sub-)urban phenomenon. The results are discussed with respect to the utility of environmental assessment data for studying plant invasions and improving control of invasive species.

Recent evidence suggests that the prototypic acute phase reactant C-reactive protein (CRP) is not only a marker but also a potential contributor to inflammatory diseases. CRP belongs to the family of pentraxins and as such consists of five identical non-covalently linked subunits. Contradictory data on the characteristics of CRP as either being pro- or anti-inflammatory may be explained by the existence of two conformations of the protein: the circulating native, pentameric CRP (pCRP) and the monomeric isoform (mCRP), formed as a result of a dissociation process of pCRP. In vitro both isoforms exhibit a very distinct inflammatory profile. We recently identified a localized, physiologically relevant pCRP dissociation mechanism by activated platelets and apoptotic cells and showed the deposition of mCRP in inflamed tissue. Here we review the literature on the causal role of pCRP and mCRP in the light of our findings and critically analyze the current controversies around CRP. The novel understanding of the localized dissociation of circulating pentameric CRP to the distinctively pro-inflammatory monomeric CRP allows for a new view on CRP in inflammatory reactions and further highlights mCRP and the pCRP dissociation process as a potential therapeutic target.

La evidencia reciente sugiere que el reactivo de fase aguda un prote&iacute;na C reactiva (PCR) es no s&oacute;lo un marcador sino tambi&eacute;n colaborador potencial enfermedades inflamatorias. CRP pertenece a la familia de pentraxins y como tal se compone de cinco subunidades id&eacute;nticas de forma no covalente enlazados. Datos contradictorios sobre las caracter&iacute;sticas de la PCR como siendo pro - o antiinflamatoria puede explicarse por la existencia de dos conformaciones de la prote&iacute;na: el nativo de circulaci&oacute;n, pentam&eacute;rica CRP (pCRP) y la isoforma monom&eacute;rica (mCRP), formado como resultado de un proceso de disociaci&oacute;n de pCRP. In vitro ambas isoformas presentan un perfil inflamatorio muy distinto. Identificamos recientemente localizado, mecanismo de disociaci&oacute;n pCRP fisiol&oacute;gicamente relevantes por plaquetas activadas y apoptosis de c&eacute;lulas y demostr&oacute; la deposici&oacute;n de mCRP en tejido inflamado. Aqu&iacute; revisamos la literatura sobre el papel causal de la pCRP y mCRP a la luz de nuestros resultados y cr&iacute;tico analizar las actuales controversias alrededor de CRP. La nueva comprensi&oacute;n de la disociaci&oacute;n localizada de circulaci&oacute;n pentam&eacute;rica que CRP a la CRP monom&eacute;rica distintivo proinflamatoria permite una visi&oacute;n de CRP en reacciones inflamatorias y m&aacute;s destacan mCRP y el proceso de disociaci&oacute;n de la pCRP como una potencial diana terap&eacute;utica.

Previous studies have reported that C-reactive protein (CRP) interacting with low-density lipoproteins (LDL) affects macrophage activation and LDL uptake. However, the physiological relevance of CRP-LDL interaction with circulating monocytes remains elusive. Moreover, recent studies have shown that CRP exists in two isoforms with partly opposing characteristics pentameric (pCRP) and monomeric CRP (mCRP). Here we investigated the effects of CRP interacting with minimally modified low-density lipoprotein (mmLDL) interaction in regard to events involved in formation of atherosclerotic plaque. We analyzed the effect of mmLDL on human monocytes and found a substantial increase in monocyte activation as evaluated by CD11b/CD18 expression and increased monocyte adhesion under static and under shear flow conditions to human endothelial cells. Monocyte adhesion and activation was attenuated by pCRP via the prevention of mmLDL binding to monocytes. These anti-inflammatory properties of pCRP were lost when it dissociates to the monomeric form. Our results elucidate the physiological relevance of the CRP-mmLDL interaction and furthermore confirm the importance of the previously described pCRP dissociation to mCRP as a localized inflammatory "activation" mechanism.

Pentameric CRP attenuates inflammatory effects of mmLDL by inhibiting mmLDL--monocyte interactions.

Des &eacute;tudes ant&eacute;rieures ont signal&eacute; que la prot&eacute;ine C - r&eacute;active (CRP) interagissant avec les lipoprot&eacute;ines de basse densit&eacute; (LDL) touche activation des macrophages et la captation des LDL. Toutefois, la pertinence physiologique de l&#39;interaction avec les monocytes circulants CRP-LDL reste insaisissable. En outre, des &eacute;tudes r&eacute;centes ont montr&eacute; que la CRP existe dans deux isoformes adverses en partie les caract&eacute;ristiques pentam&eacute;rique (pCRP) et CRP monom&egrave;re (PCRM). Ici, nous avons &eacute;tudi&eacute; les effets du PRC interagissant avec une interaction minimale modifi&eacute;s lipoprot&eacute;ines de basse densit&eacute; (mmLDL) en ce qui concerne les &eacute;v&eacute;nements intervenant dans la formation de plaque ath&eacute;romateuse. Nous avons analys&eacute; l&#39;effet des mmLDL sur des monocytes humains et ont constat&eacute; une augmentation substantielle dans l&#39;activation des monocytes, telle qu&#39;&eacute;valu&eacute;e par l&#39;expression CD11b/CD18 et augment&eacute; l&#39;adh&eacute;rence des monocytes statique et dans des conditions de flux de cisaillement aux cellules endoth&eacute;liales humaines. Hier untersuchten wir die Wirkungen von CRP, die Interaktion mit minimal ver&auml;nderten low density Lipoprotein (MmLDL) Interaktion in Bezug auf Ereignisse, die Bildung von atherosklerotischen Plaque beteiligt. Wir analysiert die Auswirkungen des MmLDL auf menschlichen Monozyten und eine deutliche Erh&ouml;hung Monozyte Aktivierung von CD11b/CD18 Ausdruck ausgewertet und erh&ouml;hte Monozyte Adh&auml;sion unter statischen und unter Scherung Str&ouml;mungsverh&auml;ltnisse an menschliche Endothelzellen. Monozyt Adh&auml;sion und Aktivierung wurde von pCRP &uuml;ber die Verh&uuml;tung der MmLDL Bindung auf Monozyten abgeschw&auml;cht. Diese entz&uuml;ndungshemmenden Eigenschaften des pCRP gingen verloren, als es an der Monomeren distanziert. Unsere Ergebnisse verdeutlichen die physiologische Relevanz der CRP-MmLDL-Interaktion und au&szlig;erdem best&auml;tigen, wie wichtig die zuvor beschriebenen pCRP Dissoziation, mCRP als lokalisierte entz&uuml;ndliche &quot;Aktivierung&quot; Mechanismus.

Estudios previos han informado que la prote&iacute;na C reactiva (CRP) interactuando con lipoprote&iacute;nas de baja densidad (LDL) afecta activaci&oacute;n de macr&oacute;fagos y captaci&oacute;n de LDL. Sin embargo, la relevancia fisiol&oacute;gica de la interacci&oacute;n de la CRP-LDL con monocitos circulantes sigue siendo elusiva. Por otra parte, estudios recientes han demostrado que el CRP existe en dos isoformas con oposici&oacute;n en parte caracter&iacute;sticas pentam&eacute;rica (pCRP) y PCR monom&eacute;rica (mCRP). Aqu&iacute; investigamos los efectos de la PCR interactuando con interacci&oacute;n m&iacute;nimamente modificado lipoprote&iacute;na de baja densidad (mmLDL) en los eventos implicados en la formaci&oacute;n de placa ateroscler&oacute;tica. Analizamos el efecto de mmLDL en monocitos humanos y encontr&oacute; un aumento substancial en la activaci&oacute;n de monocitos seg&uacute;n lo evaluado por la expresi&oacute;n de CD11b/CD18 y aument&oacute; la adhesi&oacute;n de monocitos en est&aacute;tica y en condiciones de flujo de esquileo a c&eacute;lulas endoteliales humanas. Activaci&oacute;n y adhesi&oacute;n de monocitos fue atenuada por pCRP trav&eacute;s de la prevenci&oacute;n de mmLDL unirse a los monocitos. Estas propiedades antiinflamatorias de pCRP se perdieron cuando disocia a la forma monom&eacute;rica. Nuestros resultados dilucidar la relevancia fisiol&oacute;gica de la interacci&oacute;n de CRP-mmLDL y adem&aacute;s confirman la importancia de la disociaci&oacute;n pCRP descrita a mCRP como un mecanismo inflamatorio localizado &quot;activaci&oacute;n&quot;.

Tissue damage in burn injury leads to a rapid increase of leukocytes and acute phase reactants. Plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) rise within hours after the insult. No deficiency of this protein has been reported in humans, suggesting it plays a pivotal role in innate immunity. CRP in circulation is composed of five identical subunits [pentameric CRP (pCRP)]. Recently, deposits of structurally modified CRP (mCRP) have been found in inflammatory diseases. Little is known about this structural change and how it affects CRP functions. We analyzed CRP deposits in burn wounds and serum by immunohistochemistry, western blot and dot blot analysis. CRP was deposited in necrotic and inflamed tissue, but not in adjacent healthy tissue. Tissue deposited CRP was detected by mCRP-specific antibodies and structurally different from serum pCRP. mCRP but not pCRP induced reactive oxygen species production by monocytes and facilitated uptake of necrotic Jurkat cells by macrophages. In addition, it accelerated migration of keratinocytes in a scratch wound assay. The structural changes that occur in pCRP upon localization to damaged and inflamed tissue in burn wounds result in a functionally altered protein with distinct functions. mCRP exhibits opsonic, proinflammatory and promigratory properties which modulate wound healing.

The relevance of the dissociation of circulating pentameric C-reactive protein (pCRP) to its monomeric subunits (mCRP) is poorly understood. We investigated the role of conformational C-reactive protein changes in vivo.

Dissociation of pentameric to monomeric C-reactive protein localizes and aggravates inflammation: in vivo proof of a powerful proinflammatory mechanism and a new anti-inflammatory strategy.

Free muscle transfer innervated by a cross-facial nerve graft represents the criterion standard for smile reconstruction in facial paralysis. If primary reconstruction fails, a second muscle transfer is usually needed. Herein, we investigated the possibility of avoiding a second free muscle transfer by in situ coaptation of the gracilis muscle to the masseteric nerve.

It is well known that pathogens and arthropod herbivores attacking the same host plant may affect each other. Little is known, however, about their combined impact on plant fitness, which may differ from simple additive expectations. In a 2-year common garden field experiment, we tested whether the pathogen Albugo sp. (white blister rust) and the herbivorous flea beetle Phyllotreta nemorum affected each other's performance on two resistance types (G-type and P-type) of the crucifer Barbarea vulgaris ssp. arcuata, and whether biomass, reproduction and survival of the plants were affected by interactive impacts of the antagonists. Most of the insect-resistant G-plants were severely affected by white rust, which reduced biomass and reproductive potential compared to the controls. However, when also exposed to flea beetles, biomass loss was mitigated in G-plants, even though apparent disease symptoms were not reduced. Most of the insect-susceptible P-plants were resistant to white rust; however, the number of flea beetle mines tended to increase in plants also exposed to Albugo, and biomass at the last harvest was slightly lower in the combined treatment. Thus, interactive impacts of the herbivore and pathogen differed between the two resistance types, with an antagonistic combined impact in G-plants, which lasted surprisingly long, and a slight synergistic impact in P-plants.
