In part due to their genetic uniformity and stable characteristics, inbred rodents or their F1 progeny are frequently used to study brain aging. However, it is recognized that focus on a single genotype could lead to generalizations about brain aging that might not apply to the species as a whole, or to the human population. As a potential alternative to uniform genotypes, genetically heterogeneous (HET) mice, produced by a four-way cross, were tested in the current study to determine if they exhibit age-related declines in cognitive and psychomotor function similar to other rodent models of brain aging. Young (4Â months) and older (23Â months) CB6F1â€‰Ã—â€‰C3D2F1 mice were administered a variety of tests for cognitive, psychomotor, and sensory/reflexive capacities. Spontaneous locomotion, rearing, and ability to turn in an alley all decreased with age, as did behavioral measures sensitive to muscle strength, balance, and motor coordination. Although no effect of age was found for either startle response amplitude or reaction time to shock stimuli, the old mice reacted with less force to low intensity auditory stimuli. When tested on a spatial swim maze task, the old mice learned less efficiently, exhibited poorer retention after a 66-h delay, and demonstrated greater difficulty learning a new spatial location. In addition, the older mice were less able to learn the platform location when it was identified by a local visual cue. En parte debido a su uniformidad gen&eacute;tica y caracter&iacute;sticas estables, endog&aacute;micas roedores o sus descendientes de la F1 se utilizan con frecuencia para estudiar el envejecimiento del cerebro. Sin embargo, se reconoce que el foco en un &uacute;nico genotipo podr&iacute;a conducir a generalizaciones sobre el envejecimiento del cerebro que no podr&iacute;a aplicarse a la especie en su conjunto, o a la poblaci&oacute;n humana. Como una alternativa potencial a genotipos uniformes, gen&eacute;tico heterog&eacute;neos ratones (HET), producidos por una cruz de cuatro v&iacute;as, fueron probados en el presente estudio para determinar si presentan disminuci&oacute;n relacionada con la edad en la funci&oacute;n cognitiva y psicomotora similar a otros modelos de roedores del envejecimiento del cerebro. Young (4 meses) y mayores pruebas (23 meses) CB6F1 &times; C3D2F1 ratones fueron administrados una variedad de capacidades cognitivas, psicomotoras y sensorial/reflexivo. Locomoci&oacute;n espont&aacute;nea, cr&iacute;a y la capacidad de convertirse en un callej&oacute;n todos disminuy&oacute; con la edad, igual comportamiento medidas sensibles a la fuerza muscular, equilibrio y coordinaci&oacute;n motora. Cuando en una tarea de laberinto espacial nadar, los ratones viejos aprendieron menos eficientemente, exhibieron retenci&oacute;n m&aacute;s pobre despu&eacute;s de una demora de 66-h y demostraron mayor dificultad para aprender una nueva ubicaci&oacute;n espacial. Adem&aacute;s, los ratones m&aacute;s viejos fueron menos capaces de aprender la ubicaci&oacute;n de la plataforma cuando fue identificado por una pista visual local. Porque hubo una correlaci&oacute;n significativa entre el rendimiento de discriminaci&oacute;n espacial y localizaci&oacute;n en los ratones viejos, es posible laberinto espacial relacionada con la edad, d&eacute;ficit de aprendizaje podr&iacute;a implicar deficiencias visuales o motores.
