Here we report three dominant nightblindness mutations in zebrafish: nightblindness e (nbe), nightblindness f (nbf) and nightblindness g (nbg). The mutants were isolated in the F1 generation of N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) mutagenized zebrafish using a behavioral assay based on visually mediated escape responses. Subsequently, electroretinographic (ERG) recordings were made, and histological sections were screened for degenerative processes. For each mutant line, correlation analysis between behavioral, ERG and histological parameters was performed, and their relationships were determined by either calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient or by ANOVA. nbe is characterized by severe rod outer segments (ROS) degeneration. The degeneration correlates weakly with behavioral threshold and ERG b-wave amplitude, however, behavioral threshold correlates strongly with ERG b-wave. nbf is characterized by a dual histological pathology: patchy ROS-degeneration and 'gaps' homogeneously distributed over the outer nuclei layer (ONL) and between cone outer segments (COS). The correlations between histological pathology and behavioral threshold, and between behavioral threshold and ERG b-wave amplitude are obvious, but the correlation between histology and b-wave amplitude is less prominent. nbg is characterized by moderate ROS degeneration and moderate correlation between histology and behavioral threshold. Interestingly, behavioral threshold correlated inversely with ERG b-wave amplitude and threshold. Thus, contrary to what is normally seen in other nightblindness mutants, in nbg, the fish with the lowest behavioral threshold had the smallest b-waves amplitudes and the highest b-wave threshold. In our interpretation, the major impairment in nbe is photoreceptor-specific. In nbf, both photoreceptor degeneration and altered post-photoreceptor signaling are responsible for the behavioral deficit. In nbg, we find hypersensitivity at a post-photoreceptoral level concurrently with behavioral impairment.

Behavioral screening for nightblindness mutants in zebrafish reveals three new loci that cause dominant photoreceptor cell degeneration.

Heterotopic gray matter has been implicated in epilepsy; however, not much is known regarding heterotopia beyond epilepsy. Here, the authors describe 2 pediatric patients with deep heterotopias contiguous with basal ganglia structures. These heterotopias appear to have manifested as movement disorders. One patient presented with a left-sided myoclonus and choreiform movements associated with a right caudate heterotopia; she experienced vast improvement after resection of periventricular heterotopia. The other patient presented with progressive dystonia and a ballistic movement disorder. Initial bilateral globus pallidus internus stimulation resulted in successful treatment of the dystonia; however, her movement disorder worsened. After an extensive workup, including STATISCOM (statistical ictal SPECT coregistered to MR imaging), the patient underwent cortical stimulation with improvement in her movement disorder. To the best of our knowledge, these cases are the first reported instances of heterotopic gray matter associated with movement disorders. Both patients experienced significant improvements following resection of their heterotopias.

Surgically treated movement disorders associated with heterotopia: report of 2 cases.

Complete spinal cord lesions and quadriplegia occur in 50%-84% of patients with bilateral facet dislocation. We present a patient who suffered both bilateral facet dislocation and bilateral pedicle fractures while remaining neurologically intact. Based on this case and our literature review, we hypothesize that bilateral facet dislocations without neurological deficits are accompanied by significant associated fractures that facilitate the maintenance of cervical spine canal patency.

Work hour restrictions and current quality, financial, and legal concerns have reduced resident operative volume and autonomy. Although laboratory (cadaveric or animal) dissection has a rich history in neurosurgery, its current role in resident training is unclear. Recent literature suggests educators have looked to simulation to accelerate the learning curve of acquiring neurosurgical technical skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and extent of laboratory dissection in neurosurgical residency programs in the United States.

The role of laboratory dissection training in neurosurgical residency: results of a national survey.

Subdural grid (SDG) electrodes have been the gold standard of invasive monitoring in medically refractory epilepsy; however, in some centers, application of SDGs has been reduced by the progressive application of stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG). This study reviews the efficacy of SDG electrode monitoring after the incorporation of the SEEG methodology at our institution.

Outcomes of Subdural Grid Electrode Monitoring in the Stereoelectroencephalography Era.

Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) is a procedure performed for patients with intractable epilepsy in order to anatomically define the epileptogenic zone (EZ) and the possible related functional cortical areas. By avoiding the need for large craniotomies and due to its intrinsic precision placement features, SEEG may be associated with fewer complications. Nevertheless, intracerebral electrodes have gained a reputation of excessive invasiveness, with a "relatively high morbidity" associated with their placement. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis of SEEG complications has not been previously performed. The goal of this study is to quantitatively review the incidence of various surgical complications associated with SEEG electrode implantation in the literature and to provide a summary estimate. This will allow physicians to accurately counsel their patients about the potential complications related to this method of extraoperative invasive monitoring.

Is SEEG safe? A systematic review and meta-analysis of stereo-electroencephalography-related complications.

Knowledge of frontal sinus morphometry is important in bifrontal, pterional, orbitozygomatic, and supraorbital craniotomies. Inadvertent frontal sinus violation can lead to infection, cerebrospinal fluid fistula, and mucocele formation. In particular, knowledge of anatomy in relation to surgically relevant landmarks can help surgeons perform these procedures more precisely and safely. We performed a descriptive radiographic analysis to better understand variations in frontal sinus anatomy.
