We propose a guidance mechanism in hollow-core optical fibres dominated by antiresonant reflection from struts of solid material in the cladding. Resonances with these struts determine the high loss bands of the fibres, and vector effects become important in determining the width of these bands through the non-degeneracy of the TE and TM polarised strut modes near cut-off. Away from resonances the light is confined through the inhibited coupling mechanism. This is demonstrated in a square lattice hollow-core microstructured polymer optical fibre.

Un polimero microstrutturate nucleo cavo in fibra ottica &egrave; realizzata in materiale policarbonato e guida di accoppiamento inibito in una struttura di due-strato &egrave; dimostrato nelle due bande di trasmissione forte con perdite minime di 9.0 dB/m a 800 nm e 3,1 dB/m a 1550 nm. Quest&#39;ultima corrisponde ad una perdita ben di sotto della perdita di materiale in policarbonato a questa lunghezza d&#39;onda, e a nostra conoscenza &egrave; la pi&ugrave; bassa perdita tamburata polimero fibra riferito alla data. A hollow-core microstructured polymer optical fiber is fabricated from polycarbonate material and guidance by inhibited coupling in a two-layer structure is demonstrated in two strong transmission bands with minimum losses of 9.0 dB/m at 800 nm and 3.1 dB/m at 1550 nm. The latter corresponds to a loss well below the polycarbonate material loss at this wavelength, and to our knowledge it is the lowest loss hollow-core polymer fiber reported to date. The short-term operational temperature limit of the fiber is shown to be 135 degrees C, significantly higher than that of conventional polymer optical fibers made of other polymers.

Letzteres entspricht einem Verlust deutlich unter der Polycarbonat-Materialverlust bei dieser Wellenl&auml;nge, und es ist unseres Wissens der niedrigsten Verlust hohl-Kern Polymer-Faser, die bisher gemeldet. Die kurzfristige operative Temperatur-Begrenzung der Faser zeigt 135 Grad C, deutlich h&ouml;her als bei herk&ouml;mmlichen Polymer optische Fasern von anderen Polymeren hergestellt werden.

We have embedded thin tapered fibers (with diameters down to 1 microm) in silica aerogel with low loss. The aerogel is rigid but behaves refractively like air, protecting the taper without disturbing light propagation along it. We successfully used CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as a dopant within a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. This doped material was used in the fabrication of a microstructured polymer optical fiber whose photoluminescence was characterized. A detailed analysis of the emission properties of the QDs as a function of temperature is presented, with the temperature dependence of this emission broken into components to show contributions from the thermo-optic effect of the PMMA and the temperature-dependence of the bandgap of the QDs.

Nous avons utilis&eacute; avec succ&egrave;s le CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) comme dopant dans une matrice de polym&eacute;thacrylate de m&eacute;thyle (PMMA). Ce mat&eacute;riau dop&eacute; a &eacute;t&eacute; utilis&eacute; dans la fabrication d&#39;une fibre optique de polym&egrave;re microstructur&eacute;es dont photoluminescence a &eacute;t&eacute; caract&eacute;ris&eacute;e. Une analyse d&eacute;taill&eacute;e des propri&eacute;t&eacute;s d&#39;&eacute;mission des QDs en fonction de la temp&eacute;rature est pr&eacute;sent&eacute;e, avec la d&eacute;pendance de la temp&eacute;rature de cette &eacute;mission divis&eacute;e en composants de montrer les contributions de l&#39;effet optique thermo le PMMA et la d&eacute;pendance en temp&eacute;rature de la bande interdite des QDs.

Wir haben erfolgreich CdSe/ZnS-Quantenpunkte (QDs) als Dotierstoff innerhalb einer Matrix Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA). Diese dotierte Material wurde bei der Herstellung eine mikrostrukturierte Polymer optische Faser verwendet deren Photolumineszenz gepr&auml;gt war. Eine detaillierte Analyse der Emission Eigenschaften der QDs als Funktion der Temperatur wird vorgestellt, mit der Temperaturabh&auml;ngigkeit dieser Emission aufgegliedert Komponenten Beitr&auml;ge aus der Thermo-optische Wirkung von PMMA und die Temperaturabh&auml;ngigkeit der Bandl&uuml;cke der QDs zeigen.

The "photonic lantern," an optical fibre device that has emerged from the field of astrophotonics, allows for a single-mode photonic function to take place within a multimode fibre. We study and evaluate the modal behaviour of photonic lanterns as well as the conditions for achieving low-loss between a multimode fibre and a "near-diffraction limited" single-mode system. We also present an intuitive analogy of the modal electromagnetic propagation behaviour along the photonic lantern transition in terms of the Kronig-Penney model in Quantum Mechanics.

We demonstrate single mode terahertz (THz) guidance in hollow-core kagome microstructured fibers over a broad frequency bandwidth. The fibers are characterized using a THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) setup, incorporating specially designed THz lenses to achieve good mode overlap with the fundamental mode field distribution. Losses 20 times lower than the losses of the fiber material are observed in the experiments, as well as broad frequency ranges of low dispersion, characteristic of hollow-core fibers.

We study, fabricate and characterize an all-solid polymer composite waveguide consisting of a multicore fiber for single-mode operation down to the visible. The individual cores of the multicore structure are arranged such that they strongly interact, to form the composite core. The behavior and parameters of the multicore geometry are analyzed in order to achieve true single-mode operation. The composite core fiber is fabricated with off-the-shelf poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) and Zeonex 480R polymers and characterized.

We report on the demonstration of three-dimensional optical trapping inside the core of a hollow-core microstructured optical fiber specifically designed and fabricated for this purpose. Optical trapping was achieved by means of an external tweezers beam incident transversely on the fiber and focused through the fiber cladding. Trapping was achieved for a range of particle sizes from 1 to 5 Âµm, and manipulation of the particles in three-dimensions through the entire cross-section of the fiber core was demonstrated. Spectroscopy was also performed on single fluorescent particles, with the fluorescence captured and guided in the fiber core. Video tracking methods allowed the optical traps to be characterized and photobleaching of single particles was also observed and characterized.

Wir berichten &uuml;ber die Demonstration von dreidimensionalen optischen &Uuml;berf&uuml;llung innerhalb des Kernes ein hohl-Kern mikrostrukturierte optische Faser speziell entwickelt und f&uuml;r diesen Zweck hergestellt. Optische &Uuml;berf&uuml;llung wurde mittels eines externen Pinzette Strahl Vorfalls transversal auf der Faser und konzentriert durch die Faser-Verkleidung. &Uuml;berf&uuml;llung wurde f&uuml;r eine Reihe von Partikelgr&ouml;&szlig;en von 1 bis 5 &micro;m erreicht, und Manipulation der Teilchen in drei Dimensionen &uuml;ber den gesamten Querschnitt der Faserkern wurde demonstriert. We investigate the use of "photonic lanterns" as adiabatic mode converters for space-division multiplexing (SDM) systems to interface multiple single-mode fibers to a multi-mode fiber. In a SDM system, minimizing the coupling loss and mode-dependent loss best utilizes all spatial modes of the fiber which increases the capacity, the transmission distance, and minimizes the outage probability. We use modal analysis, the beam propagation method, and a transfer matrix technique to analyze the lanterns throughput along with its mode dependent loss and show that unitary coupling between single-mode fibers and a multi-mode fiber is only possible by optimizing the arrangements of the cores. Results include simulations for three, 12, 15, and 51 core lanterns to couple to six, 24, 30, and 102 spatial and polarization modes, respectively.

Geometric requirements for photonic lanterns in space division multiplexing.

We demonstrate a new approach to classical fiber-fed spectroscopy. Our method is to use a photonic lantern that converts an arbitrary (e.g. incoherent) input beam into N diffraction-limited outputs. For the highest throughput, the number of outputs must be matched to the total number of unpolarized spatial modes on input. This approach has many advantages: (i) after the lantern, the instrument is constructed from 'commercial off the shelf' components; (ii) the instrument is the minimum size and mass configuration at a fixed resolving power and spectral order; (iii) the throughput is better than 60% (slit to detector, including detector QE of ~80%); (iv) the scattered light at the detector can be less than 0.1% (total power). Our first implementation operates over 1545-1555 nm (limited by the detector) with a spectral resolution of 0.055 nm (R~30,000) using a 1 × 7 (1 multi-mode input to 7 single-mode outputs) photonic lantern. This approach is a first step towards a fully integrated, multimode photonic microspectrograph.

Beating the classical limit: a diffraction-limited spectrograph for an arbitrary input beam.

We demonstrate a 3x1 fiber-based photonic lantern spatial-multiplexer with mode-selectivity greater than 6 dB and transmission loss of less than 0.3 dB. The total insertion loss of the mode-selective multiplexers when coupled to a graded-index few-mode fiber was < 2 dB. These mode multiplexers showed mode-dependent loss below 0.5 dB. To our knowledge these are the lowest insertion and mode-dependent loss devices, which are also fully compatible with conventional few-mode fiber technology and broadband operation.

Mode-selective photonic lanterns for space-division multiplexing.

We demonstrate an 11 port count wavelength selective switch (WSS) supporting spatial superchannels of three spatial modes, based on the combination of photonic lanterns and a high-port count single-mode WSS.

We propose, numerically analyze and experimentally demonstrate a novel refractive index sensor specialized for low index sensing. The device is based on a directional coupler architecture implemented in a single microstructured polymer optical fiber incorporating two waveguides within it: a single-mode core and a satellite waveguide consisting of a hollow high-index ring. This hollow channel is filled with fluid and the refractive index of the fluid is detected through changes to the wavelength at which resonant coupling occurs between the two waveguides. The sensor design was optimized for both higher sensitivity and lower detection limit, with simulations and experiments demonstrating a sensitivity exceeding 1.4 × 10(3) nm per refractive index unit. Simulations indicate a detection limit of ~2 × 10(-6) refractive index units is achievable. We also numerically investigate the performance for refractive index changes localized at the surface of the holes, a case of particular importance for biosensing.

We demonstrate the first all-fiber mode-group-selective photonic lantern using multimode graded-index fibers. Mode selectivity for mode groups LP(01), LP(11) and LP(21)+LP(02) is 20-dB, 10-dB and 7-dB respectively. The insertion loss when butt coupled to multimode graded-index fiber is below 0.6-dB. The use of the multimode graded-index fibers in the taper can significantly reduce the adiabaticity requirement.

All-fiber mode-group-selective photonic lantern using graded-index multimode fibers.

Directional mode coupling in an asymmetric holey fiber coupler is demonstrated both numerically and experimentally for the first time. The holey fiber mode couplers have interesting spectral characteristics and are also found to exhibit increased dimensional tolerances. Following a design based on numerical investigations, a dual-core polymer holey fiber coupler for LP(01) and LP(11) mode multiplexing was fabricated via a drilling and drawing technique. The measurements are compared with the simulation results.
