One specialized environment that can influence development arises in the context of social interactions, including the environment contributed by a sexual partner during sexual reproduction. It is often difficult, however, to separate out the effect of mating (fertilization) from the effect of social environment. In the study reported here we examine the effect of social environment mediated by a pheromonal signal on the fertility and fecundity of the facultatively parthenogenetic cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea. By examining parthenogenetically reproducing females, we isolate the effects of social environment in the absence of mating or fertilization. Females exposed to male odors are more likely to produce parthenogenetic offspring. Further, increased exposure to the male pheromone increases the number of offspring produced. Variation in timing of reproduction is also dependent on the male. Thus, social environments are a mechanism by which males contribute to the development of their offspring, resulting in variation in development. This study illustrates the potential evolutionary importance of social environments in development, because a requirement for male-contributed environments may be a constraint to evolving asexual reproduction from a sexually reproducing species.

Developmental flexibility and the effect of social environment on fertility and fecundity in parthenogenetic reproduction.

Recent studies in two species of Drosophila have demonstrated a negative effect of parental age on offspring fitness, including a reduced hatch rate of eggs and larval-to-adult viability. This has led to a call to consider the decline of offspring quality as a function of parental age in theoretical considerations of the evolution of ageing. We have tested whether a decline in egg and larval quality of older mothers is a general feature of senescence by examining it in the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea. We also tested whether maternal age affected the reproductive potential of daughters. Although maternal age at first reproduction profoundly affected maternal fitness, there was no difference in hatch rate or larval viability between the offspring of young and old mothers. Likewise, the reproductive potential of the daughters of young and old mothers was the same. Thus, while maternal age effects may be important aspects of ageing in some systems, the generality and overall importance for theories of ageing remain unclear.

Is a decline in offspring quality a necessary consequence of maternal age?

Ejaculates function as an integrated unit to ensure male fertility and paternity, can have a complex structure, and can experience multiple episodes of selection. Current studies on the evolution of ejaculates typically focus on phenotypic variation in sperm number, size, or related traits such as testes size as adaptations to postcopulatory male-male competition. However, the evolution of the integrated nature of ejaculate structure and function depends on genetic variation in and covariation between the component parts. Here we report a quantitative genetic study of the components of the ejaculate of the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea, including those we know to experience postcopulatory sexual selection, in the context of functional integration of ejaculate characters. We use the patterns of genetic variation and covariation to infer how the integration of the functions of the ejaculate constrain and shape its evolution. Ejaculate components were highly variable, showed significant additive genetic variance, and moderate to high evolvability. The level of genetic variation in these characters, despite strong directional or truncating selection, may reflect the integration of multiple episodes of selection that occur in N. cinerea. There were few significant phenotypic correlations, but all the genetic correlations among ejaculate characters were significantly different from zero. The patterns of genetic variation and covariation suggest that there are important trade-offs among individual traits of the ejaculate and that evolution of ejaculate characteristics will not proceed unconstrained. Fully describing the genetic relationships among traits that perform as an integrated unit helps us understand how functional relationships constrain or facilitate the evolution of the complex structure that is the ejaculate.

Constraints on evolution and postcopulatory sexual selection: trade-offs among ejaculate characteristics.

Different aspects of male quality as a mate can vary independently. When this is the case, females may need to use multiple cues to accurately assess overall mate quality. We examined the pattern of mating preference in the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea. Sexual conflict occurs in this species because male manipulation of female mating receptivity can result in reduced female fitness. We predicted that since females cannot remate within a single reproductive bout because of male manipulation, females should assess male mating history to avoid mating with males with low fertility caused by sperm exhaustion. In a mate-preference experiment, we found that females discriminated against males who had mated multiple times. Females also discriminated against males who had consorted with several females but had been prevented from mating with those females. Thus, females appeared to be able to detect cues on males that were derived from previous mates and to use this information to avoid mating with sperm-exhausted males. We suggest that females may commonly use multiple cues to assess different aspects of mate quality, especially when male quality changes over time. This is an under-studied phenomenon that could help explain individual variation in female mating preferences.

Female mate preference and sexual conflict: females prefer males that have had fewer consorts.

Women who delay childbearing risk subfertility. However, this loss of fertility is not a simple function of aging. Women who have had children early in life tend to maintain fertility longer, measured as a later age at menopause. But why should otherwise healthy women lose reproductive capacity? Loss of fertility independent of senescence, menopause, has been approached from two perspectives: evolution and development. Evolutionary biologists focus on how natural selection favors survival after reproductive ability has ceased, whereas reproductive biologists examine mechanisms by which women lose fertility with age and factors that influence the rate of reproductive aging. Combining mechanistic studies with evolutionary theory should allow us to define principles of the evolution of postembryonic development of ovaries, including the role of reproductive timing relative to sexual maturation. Achieving this will require identifying appropriate, and more experimentally tractable, taxa in which to study how early reproductive events influence lifetime fertility. We work with an invertebrate species, the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea, with a complex reproductive biology in which females experience reproductive cycles, give live birth, and show age-related decline in fertility. Thus, N. cinerea provides an opportunity to use an experimental approach to examine mechanisms by which females lose reproductive potential as they delay reproduction. Our results demonstrate that the loss of both oocytes ready for fertilization and future oocytes in females that delay mating is because of apoptosis. We suggest that loss of fertility because of delayed mating may originate in a nonadaptive response in control of apoptosis through mistiming of reproduction.

A delay in age at first mating results in the loss of future reproductive potential via apoptosis.

In many species, females abandon mate choice to ensure that eggs are fertilized before they are lost. But why do females not just maintain oocytes longer if there is a benefit to mate choice? We conducted a quantitative genetic study in the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea to test whether genetic constraints prevent the evolution of oocyte maintenance or selection against oocyte loss is weak when females mate late relative to sexual maturity. We found standing genetic variation within the population and no evidence for genetic constraints. Levels of genetic variation are of the magnitude found for life-history traits in general, suggesting that this trait has been exposed to selection. We unexpectedly found two categories of females: those that delay reproduction and those that reproduce at a normal time when mating late, which could indicate alternative strategies. However, frequency-dependent selection does not maintain this variation as females that delay always reproduce less well. Given these findings, we suggest that there may be advantages to egg degradation. The evolution of maintenance of fertilizable oocytes over time would then be constrained by the need to maintain the mechanism by which females control the distribution of resources between current and future reproductive events.

The cost of keeping eggs fresh: quantitative genetic variation in females that mate late relative to sexual maturation.

Ovarian apoptosis has been found to occur in the female cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea in response to lack of mates. It has been proposed that ovarian apoptosis in continuously breeding insects is an adaptive mechanism for recouping resources in poor conditions (oosorption). However, N. cinerea is a cyclically breeding insect and ovarian apoptosis may represent ageing and clearance of old unused oocytes. To test the hypothesis that oocyte resorption via apoptosis reflects the reclamation of resources, we delayed mating in combination with positive and negative nutritional signals. Females without access to food during sexual maturation invested less in reproduction and had elevated rates of ovarian apoptosis in the terminal oocyte. Starvation also induced apoptosis in non-vitellogenic oocytes of the vitellarium and germinarium, which would be used for future reproductive events. This is paradoxical as theory states that oosorption is an adaptive means of rerouting resources into investment in future reproduction, yet these oocytes do not represent a cache of resources and their loss could limit future reproduction.

Effects of mating delay and nutritional signals on resource recycling in a cyclically breeding cockroach.

In a wide variety of species, a female's age of first reproduction influences offspring size and survival, suggesting that there exists an optimal timing of reproduction. Mothers in many species also influence offspring size and survival after birth through variation in parental care. We experimentally separated these effects in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides to test for coadaptation between prenatal and postnatal maternal effects associated with age at first reproduction. Females that reproduced early produced offspring with lower birth weight. The amount of parental care depended on the age of first reproduction of the caretaker, as did the extent of offspring begging. As predicted for a coadaptation of maternal effects, prenatal and postnatal effects were opposite for different-aged mothers, and larval weight gain and survival was greatest when the age of the caretaker and birth mother matched. Thus, prenatal effects intrinsically associated with age of first reproduction can be ameliorated by innate plasticity in postnatal care. A coadaptation of prenatal and postnatal maternal effects may evolve to allow variable timing of the first reproductive attempt. Such a coadaptation might be particularly valuable when females are constrained from reproducing at an optimal age, as, for example, in species that breed on scarce and unpredictable resources.

Coadaptation of prenatal and postnatal maternal effects.

Although the argument over genetic influences on social dominance is contentious, genetic models of interacting phenotypes provide a theoretical framework for heritable effects on, and therefore evolution of, social behavior. Here we adapt the interacting phenotype model to show how social dominance can evolve. Our model makes a number of predictions: rapid evolution of behavior, strong correlated responses in associated traits (such as a badge of status), and, because context is important for social dominance, integrated evolution of both dominant and subordinate behavior reflecting direct and indirect genetic effects and social selection. We also describe the results of empirical work, artificial selection based on social status within a hierarchy in the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea, that we used to test the predictions of our model. There was little change within selection lines in the expression of agonistic behavior, but by just generation 7 of selection, in comparisons between lines, high-line males consistently dominated low and control males, while low-line males were consistently subordinate to high-line and control males. There was a strong correlated response to selection in the pheromonal badge of status. Some correlated responses to selection differed among replicate lines, with the compound that makes males subordinate changed in one replicate, while the compound that confers dominance was altered in the other. Overall, our results are consistent with predictions from models of interacting phenotypes: social dominance is influenced by additive genetic variation, can evolve as a result of social selection, and evolution of social interactions appears to be rapid. Finally, different responses in the replicates allowed us to test very specific predictions regarding the role of the social pheromone in N. cinerea, highlighting the value of artificial selection experiments as a tool in evolutionary behavioral genetic studies.

The evolution of interacting phenotypes: genetics and evolution of social dominance.

We have yet to understand fully how conditions during different periods of development interact to influence life-history structure. Can the negative effects of poor juvenile nutrition be overcome by a good adult diet, or are life-history strategies set by early experience? Here, we tested the influence and interaction of different nutritional quality during juvenile and sexual development on female resource allocation physiology, life history and courtship behaviour in the cockroach, Nauphoeta cinerea. Nymphs were raised on either a good-quality or poor-quality diet. After adult eclosion, females were either switched to the opposite diet or remained on their original diet. We assessed mating behaviour and lifetime reproductive success for half of the females from each treatment. We evaluated reproductive investment, somatic investment and resource reallocation from reproduction to the soma via oocyte apoptosis in the remaining females. We found that poor juvenile conditions resulted in a fat phenotype with slow juvenile growth and short reproductive lifespan that could not be retrieved with a change in diet. Good juvenile conditions resulted in the converse, but again fixed, phenotype in adulthood. Thus, juvenile nutrition sets adult patterns of resource allocation.

Separate and combined effects of nutrition during juvenile and sexual development on female life-history trajectories: the thrifty phenotype in a cockroach.

Plasticity in reproductive physiology is one avenue by which environmental signals, such as poor quality food, can be coordinated with adaptive responses. Insects have the ability to resorb oocytes that are not oviposited. Oosorption is proposed to be an adaptive mechanism to optimize fitness in hostile environments, recouping resources that might otherwise be lost, and reinvesting them into future reproductive potential. We tested the hypothesis that oosorption is an evolved mechanism by which females can reallocate resources from current reproductive effort to survival and future reproduction, when conditions for reproduction are poor, by examining the reproductive physiology and life-history outcome under poor quality food in populations of the milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) that have adapted to live on sunflower seed. Females fed a diet of pumpkin seeds, known to be a poor host food, had higher levels of ovarian apoptosis (oosorption), lower reproductive output, but no reduction in life span under poor nutrition, as predicted under the oosorption hypothesis. However, the schedule of reproduction was surprising given the "wait to reproduce" assumption of oosorption as early fecundity was unaffected.
