Noise measurements were made in cinemas during the showing of four films, to establish whether the noise levels from films might pose a risk of damage to hearing. The L(Aeq) levels for the full playing time of each film were all below 80 dB(A). Noise levels did sometimes exceed 90 dB(A) but this was never for more than a total of two minutes, and was usually for only a few seconds. Repeat L(Aeq) levels for the same films were shown to vary by 3-4 dB across different cinemas. Based on this limited sample of films and cinemas, there is no evidence that sound levels in cinemas cause permanent damage to hearing.

It is generally believed that both sensory immaturity and inattention contribute to the poor listening of some children. However, the relative contribution of each factor, within and between individuals, and the nature of the inattention are poorly understood. In three experiments we examined the threshold and response variability of 6-11 y.o. children on pure tone frequency discrimination (FD) tasks. We first confirmed that younger children had both higher thresholds and greater within- and between-listener variability than older children and adults. Higher thresholds were mostly attributed to high response variability due to poor sustained attention. We next compared performance on the auditory FD task with that on visual spatial FD. No correlation was found between the thresholds or variability of individuals on the two tasks, suggesting involvement of modality-specific attention. Finally, we found lower thresholds for 8-9 y.o. children performing auditory FD training in a classroom than in the laboratory, possibly due to training session length or to a more familiar, motivating and focussed training environment. The adult-like performance of many younger children at times during their testing or training, together with the high response variability of immature performers, suggested that most elevated FD thresholds in children are due to inattention.

Frequency discrimination in children: perception, learning and attention.

Toutefois, la contribution relative de chaque facteur, &#xE0; l&#x26;#39;int&#xE9;rieur et entre les individus et la nature de l&#x26;#39;inattention sont mal comprises. Nous avons ensuite compar&#xE9; les performances sur la t&#xE2;che auditive FD avec celle sur visuo-spatial, FD. La performance des adultes comme des-nombreux jeunes enfants &#xE0; des moments au cours de leurs essais ou de formation, conjointement avec la variabilit&#xE9; de r&#xE9;ponse &#xE9;lev&#xE9; d&#x26;#39;artistes immatures, a sugg&#xE9;r&#xE9; que les plus &#xE9;lev&#xE9;es seuils FD chez les enfants sont dus &#xE0; l&#x26;#39;inattention.

Auditory training has been advocated as a management strategy for children with hearing, listening or language difficulties. Because poor speech-in-noise perception is commonly reported, previous research has focused on the use of complex (word/sentence) stimuli as auditory training material to improve sentence-in-noise perception. However, some evidence suggests that engagement with the training stimuli is more important than the type of stimuli used for training. The aim of this experiment was to assess if sentence-in-noise perception could be improved using simpler auditory training stimuli.

El entrenamiento auditivo se ha defendido como una estrategia de manejo para ni&#xF1;os con dificultades de audici&#xF3;n, comprensi&#xF3;n auditiva o de lenguaje. Debido a que los pobres del habla en ruido de la percepci&#xF3;n que com&#xFA;nmente se inform&#xF3;, la investigaci&#xF3;n previa se ha centrado en la utilizaci&#xF3;n de complejos (palabra / frase) est&#xED;mulos como material de entrenamiento auditivo para mejorar la condena en la percepci&#xF3;n del ruido. Sin embargo, algunas evidencias sugieren que el compromiso con los est&#xED;mulos de entrenamiento es m&#xE1;s importante que el tipo de est&#xED;mulos utilizados para la formaci&#xF3;n.
