Seagrasses produce much of the organic carbon in the shallow waters of the Caribbean and it has long been assumed that a substantial portion of this carbon is exported to nearby habitats, contributing substantially to their food webs. In the shallow coastal waters of the Florida Keys (USA), seagrass intersperses with hard-bottom habitat where bushy, red macroalgae are the most prominent primary producers. However, the relative importance of seagrass-derived carbon versus autochthonous algal production or phytoplankton in supporting higher trophic levels within hard-bottom communities has never been investigated. We compared the carbon and nitrogen isotopic values of potential primary producers and representative higher trophic level taxa from hard-bottom sites on the bay-side and ocean-side of the Florida Keys. We also included in our study a set of bay-side sites that experienced significant ecological disturbances over the past decade (e.g., cyanobacteria blooms, seagrass die-off, and sponge die-offs) that may have altered trophic relationships in those regions. We did not detect any differences among regions in the trophic status of hard-bottom taxa that might be associated with ecosystem disturbance. However, our results suggest that autochthonous production of algal detritus is an important source of secondary production in these hard-bottom communities, with seagrass and phytoplankton contributing smaller fractions.

Stable isotope analysis of production and trophic relationships in a tropical marine hard-bottom community.

Les herbiers marins produisent une grande partie du carbone organique dans les eaux des Cara&iuml;bes et il a longtemps &eacute;t&eacute; consid&eacute;r&eacute; qu&#39;une partie importante de ce carbone est export&eacute;e vers des habitats &agrave; proximit&eacute;, contribuant consid&eacute;rablement &agrave; leurs r&eacute;seaux trophiques. Dans les eaux c&ocirc;ti&egrave;res peu profondes de la Florida Keys (USA), jonc de mer entrem&ecirc;le avec habitat fond dur o&ugrave; les macroalgues touffue, rouge sont les plus &eacute;minents producteurs primaires. Cependant, l&#39;importance relative de carbone d&eacute;riv&eacute; de jonc de mer par rapport &agrave; la production algale autochtone ou phytoplancton en soutenant les niveaux trophiques sup&eacute;rieurs au sein des communaut&eacute;s de fond dur n&#39;a jamais &eacute;t&eacute; &eacute;tudi&eacute;e. Seegraswiesen produzieren, ein Gro&szlig;teil der organische Kohlenstoff in den flachen Gew&auml;ssern der Karibik und lange wurde vorausgesetzt, dass ein erheblicher Teil dieser Kohlenstoff ihrer Nahrungsketten erheblich zur nahe gelegenen Lebensr&auml;ume exportiert wird. In den flachen K&uuml;stengew&auml;ssern der Florida Keys (USA) streut Seegras mit hart-Boden-Habitat wo buschig, rote Makroalgen sind die prominentesten Prim&auml;rerzeuger. Die relative Bedeutung der Seagrass abgeleiteten CO2 versus autochthon Algen Produktion oder Phytoplankton unterst&uuml;tzen h&ouml;here trophische Ebenen innerhalb der hart-Boden-Gemeinschaften ist jedoch nie untersucht worden. Wir verglichen die Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff isotopische Werte der potenziellen Prim&auml;rerzeuger und repr&auml;sentativen h&ouml;here trophische Ebene Taxa aus hart-Boden-Standorte auf die Bucht-Seite und Ozean-Seite der Florida Keys. Erbe marine producono gran parte del carbonio organico in acque poco profonde dei Caraibi e lungo &egrave; stato ipotizzato che una parte sostanza di questo carbonio viene esportata in habitat vicini, contribuendo sostanzialmente a loro ragnatele di cibo. Nelle acque costiere poco profonde di Florida Keys (USA), seagrass sparpaglia con fondo rigido habitat dove macroalga cespugliosa, rosso sono i pi&ugrave; importanti produttori primari. Tuttavia, l&#39;importanza relativa di carbonio derivato da seagrass versus produzione algale autoctoni o fitoplancton nel sostenere livelli trofici superiori all&#39;interno delle Comunit&agrave; di fondo duro non ha mai indagato. Abbiamo confrontato i valori isotopici carbonio e azoto di potenziali produttori primari e rappresentante taxa di livello trofico superiore da siti di fondo duro sul lato baia e oceano di Florida Keys. Abbiamo anche incluso nel nostro studio una serie di siti di baia-lato che sperimentato disturbi ecologici significativi nell&#39;ultimo decennio (ad es., fioriture di cianobatteri, alghe Moria e morie in spugna) che pu&ograve; avere alterato rapporti trofici in quelle regioni. Noi non lo rileva eventuali differenze tra le regioni dello stato trofico di taxa di fondo duro che potrebbe essere associata a disturbo di ecosistema. Las praderas marinas producen gran parte del carbono org&aacute;nico en las aguas poco profundas del Caribe y durante mucho tiempo se ha asumido que una parte sustancial de este carb&oacute;n se exporta a h&aacute;bitats cercanos, contribuyendo sustancialmente a sus redes tr&oacute;ficas. En las aguas costeras poco profundas de los Cayos de la Florida (E.e.u.u.), seagrass se entremezcla con fondos duros h&aacute;bitat donde macroalgas tupidas, rojo son los m&aacute;s destacados productores primarios. Sin embargo, nunca se ha investigado la importancia relativa de carbono derivados de algas versus producci&oacute;n de algas aut&oacute;ctona o fitoplancton en el apoyo a niveles tr&oacute;ficos dentro de comunidades de fondos duros. Comparamos los valores de is&oacute;topos carbono y nitr&oacute;geno de potenciales productores primarios y representante taxones de nivel tr&oacute;fico superiores de sitios de fondos duros en el lado de la bah&iacute;a y junto al mar de los Cayos de Florida. Tambi&eacute;n incluimos en nuestro estudio un conjunto de sitios de Bah&iacute;a-lado que experimentaron disturbios ecol&oacute;gicos significativos durante la &uacute;ltima d&eacute;cada (por ejemplo, cianobacteria, seagrass mortandad y mortandad de esponja) que pudo haber alterado las relaciones tr&oacute;ficas en esas regiones. Transmissible pathogens are the bane of social animals, so they have evolved behaviours to decrease the probability of infection. There is no record, however, of social animals avoiding diseased individuals of their own species in the wild. Here we show how healthy, normally gregarious Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) avoid conspecifics that are infected with a lethal virus. Early detection and avoidance of infected, though not yet infectious, individuals by healthy lobsters confers a selective advantage and highlights the importance of host behaviour in disease transmission among natural populations.

A poly(butyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) (BMA-MAA) scaffold was fabricated by an in situ polymerization solvent casting/particulate leaching technique. It displayed high porosity (85-90%), pore interconnectivity, and a pore size range of 100-650 microm. Compression testing of the scaffolds demonstrated a dependence of the compressive stiffness on several fabrication variables including the ratio of monomer to salt used during the polymerization, the degree of salt fusion, and the choice of alternative comonomers to BMA. Subcutaneous implantation of BMA-MAA scaffolds in mice revealed an increased level of histological angiogenesis in tissue invading the pores of the scaffold compared to a BMA control, consistent with the prediction that methacrylic acid (MAA) containing copolymer beads are angiogenic in a wound healing context. At postoperative day 21, the capillary density in the BMA-MAA scaffolds was 56 +/- 13/mm(2) as compared to 32 +/- 8/mm(2) for the BMA scaffolds. With further investigation, it is expected that this biomaterial capable of eliciting an angiogenic response will have widespread application in tissue engineering.

We examined the histopathological and hematological response of the Caribbean spiny lobster to experimentally induced infections with Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1). The fixed phagocytes in the hepatopancreas were the primary sites of PaV1 infection in spiny lobsters. Fixed phagocytes were activated in early infections. However, as the disease progressed, the fixed phagocytes became infected and eventually lysed. Infected cells were subsequently observed in the hepatopancreas, gill, heart, hindgut, glial cells around the ventral nerves, and in the cuticular epidermis and foregut. In advanced infections, spongy connective tissues were heavily infected, as were glial cells around the optic nerves. The structure of the hepatopancreas was significantly altered as the disease progressed. The hemal sinuses among the hepatopancreatic tubules filled with massive amounts of cellular aggregates, including infected circulating hemocytes and spongy connective tissues. Atrophy of the hepatopancreatic tubules occurred in the late stage of viral infection. The virus caused significant decreases in total hemocyte counts and significantly altered several constituents in the hemolymph lysates of diseased lobsters, including: glucose, phosphorus, and triglycerides.

The Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus, an important fisheries species, is host to Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1), a lethal, unclassified virus--the first found in any species of lobster--prevalent in juvenile lobsters. We describe a series of laboratory experiments aimed at assessing the likely modes of disease transmission, determining the survival of lobsters relative to each transmission pathway and identifying potential alternate hosts. Given evidence for lower prevalence of PaV1 in large lobsters, the effect of lobster size on susceptibility was also examined. Results demonstrated that PaV1 can be transmitted to juvenile lobsters via inoculation, ingestion of diseased tissue, contact with diseased lobsters and--among the smallest juveniles--through water over distances of a few meters. Contact and waterborne transmission, the most likely modes of transmission in the wild, were less efficient than inoculation or ingestion. Nevertheless, about half of the smallest lobsters in contact and waterborne trials contracted the disease and died within 3 mo. Other decapods that co-occur with P. argus (e.g. spotted lobster P. guttatus, stone crab Menippe mercenaria, channel crab Mithrax spinosissimus) did not acquire the disease after inoculation with PaV1-infected hemolymph. Our results confirmed that PaV1 is highly infectious and lethal to juvenile P. argus, particularly early benthic juveniles in the wild, and, hence, is a threat to mariculture.

Transmission of Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) and its effect on the survival of juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster.

El Caribe langosta Panulirus argus, una especie de pesquer&iacute;as importantes, es sede de virus Panulirus argus 1 (PaV1), un virus letal, sin clasificar--el primero encontrado en cualquier especie de langosta--prevalente en las langostas juveniles. Describimos una serie de experimentos de laboratorio encaminadas a evaluar los probables modos de transmisi&oacute;n de la enfermedad, determinar la supervivencia de las langostas en relaci&oacute;n con cada v&iacute;a de transmisi&oacute;n e identificando posibles anfitriones de suplente. Ante la evidencia de menor prevalencia de PaV1 en grandes langostas, el efecto del tama&ntilde;o de la langosta en susceptibilidad tambi&eacute;n fue examinado. Los resultados demostraron que PaV1 puede transmitirse a las langostas juveniles mediante inoculaci&oacute;n, ingesti&oacute;n de tejido enfermo, contacto con enfermas langostas y--entre los juveniles m&aacute;s peque&ntilde;os--a trav&eacute;s del agua a distancias de unos pocos metros. Contacto y transmisi&oacute;n transmitidas por el agua, los modos m&aacute;s probables de transmisi&oacute;n en la naturaleza, eran menos eficientes que la inoculaci&oacute;n o ingesti&oacute;n. Sin embargo, cerca de la mitad de las m&aacute;s peque&ntilde;as langostas en contacto y transmitidas por el agua ensayos contrajeron la enfermedad y muri&oacute; dentro de 3 meses. Otros dec&aacute;podos que co-ocurren con p. argus (e.g. spotted langosta P. guttatus, jaiba Menippe mercenaria, canal cangrejo Mithrax spinosissimus) no adquiri&oacute; la enfermedad despu&eacute;s de la inoculaci&oacute;n con hemolinfa PaV1 infectados. Nuestros resultados confirman que PaV1 es altamente infecciosa y mortal al juvenil p. argus, juveniles bent&oacute;nicos particularmente tempranos en la naturaleza, y, por tanto, es una amenaza para la maricultura.

PaV1 is widespread in the Caribbean with infections reported in Florida (U.S.A.), St. Croix, St. Kitts, Yucatan (Mexico), Belize, and Cuba. It is most prevalent and nearly always lethal in the smallest juvenile lobsters, but this declines with increasing lobster size; adults harbor the virus, but do not present the characteristic signs of the disease. No other PaV1 hosts are known. The prevalence of PaV1 in juvenile lobsters from the Florida Keys has been stable since 1999, but has risen to nearly 11% in the eastern Yucatan since 2001. Heavily infected lobsters become sedentary, cease feeding, and die of metabolic exhaustion. Experimental routes of viral transmission include ingestion, contact, and for newly settled juveniles, free virus particles in seawater. Prior to infectiousness, healthy lobsters tend to avoid diseased lobsters and so infected juvenile lobsters mostly dwell alone, which appears to reduce disease transmission. However, avoidance of diseased individuals may result in increased shelter competition between healthy and diseased lobsters, and greater predation on infected lobsters. Little is known about PaV1 outside of Mexico and the USA, but it poses a potential threat to P. argus fisheries throughout the Caribbean.

En el a&ntilde;o 2000, fue descubierto un virus pat&oacute;geno en juveniles caribe&ntilde;as langostas Panulirus argus de los Cayos de Florida, Estados Unidos Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) es el primer virus pat&oacute;geno natural de langostas y que afecta profundamente a su ecolog&iacute;a y fisiolog&iacute;a. PaV1 est&aacute; extendida en el Caribe con infecciones reportadas en Florida (Estados Unidos), St. Croix, St Kitts, Yucat&aacute;n (M&eacute;xico), Belice y Cuba. Es m&aacute;s frecuente y casi siempre letal en las langostas juveniles m&aacute;s peque&ntilde;as, pero esto disminuye con el aumento de tama&ntilde;o de langosta; adultos albergan el virus, pero no presentan los signos caracter&iacute;sticos de la enfermedad. No other hosts PaV1 son conocidos. La prevalencia de PaV1 en langostas juveniles de los Cayos de la Florida ha sido estable desde 1999, pero ha aumentado a casi el 11% en el Yucat&aacute;n oriental desde el a&ntilde;o 2001. Langostas pesadamente infectadas se convierten en sedentarias, dejan de alimentar y morir de agotamiento metab&oacute;lico. Experimentales rutas de transmisi&oacute;n viral incluyen la ingesti&oacute;n, contacto y para los juveniles reci&eacute;n colocados, libre de part&iacute;culas del virus en el agua de mar. Antes la infecciosidad, langostas saludables tienden a evitar las langostas enfermas y langostas juveniles tan infectadas en su mayor&iacute;a habitan solos, que parece reducir la transmisi&oacute;n de la enfermedad. Sin embargo, evitaci&oacute;n de las personas enfermas puede resultar en competencia de abrigo creciente entre sanas y enfermas de langostas y mayor depredaci&oacute;n de langostas infectadas.
