The brain's default network (DN) is comprised of several cortical regions demonstrating robust intrinsic connectivity at rest. The authors sought to examine the differential effects of emotional reasoning and reasoning under certainty upon the DN through the employment of an event-related fMRI design in healthy participants. Participants were presented with syllogistic arguments which were organized into a 2â€‰Ã—â€‰2 factorial design in which the first factor was emotional salience and the second factor was certainty/uncertainty. We demonstrate that regions of the DN were activated both during reasoning that is emotionally salient and during reasoning which is more certain, suggesting that these processes are neurally instantiated on a network level. In addition, we present evidence that emotional reasoning preferentially activates the dorsomedial (dMPFC) subsystem of the DN, whereas reasoning in the context of certainty activates areas specific to the DN's medial temporal (MTL) subsystem. We postulate that emotional reasoning mobilizes the dMPFC subsystem of the DN because this type of reasoning relies upon the recruitment of introspective and self-relevant data such as personal bias and temperament. In contrast, activation of the MTL subsystem during certainty argues that this form of reasoning involves the recruitment of mnemonic and semantic associations to derive conclusions.

Red de defecto del cerebro (DN) est&aacute; compuesta de varias regiones corticales demostrando robusta conectividad intr&iacute;nseca en reposo. Los autores intentaron examinar los efectos diferenciales de razonamiento emocional y razonamiento bajo certeza sobre el DN a trav&eacute;s del empleo de un dise&ntilde;o relacionado con eventos fMRI en participantes sanos. Intrinsic activity in the brain is organized into networks. Although constrained by their anatomical connections, functional correlations between nodes of these networks reorganize dynamically. Dynamic organization implies that couplings between network nodes can be reconfigured to support processing demands. To explore such reconfigurations, we combined repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) to modulate cortical activity in one node of the default network, and assessed the effect of this upon functional correlations throughout the network. Two different frequencies of rTMS to the same default network node (the left posterior inferior parietal lobule, lpIPL) induced two topographically distinct changes in functional connectivity. High-frequency rTMS to lpIPL decreased functional correlations between cortical default network nodes, but not between these nodes and the hippocampal formation. In contrast, low frequency rTMS to lpIPL did not alter connectivity between cortical default network nodes, but increased functional correlations between lpIPL and the hippocampal formation. These results suggest that the default network is composed of (at least) two subsystems. More broadly, the finding that two rTMS stimulation regimens to the same default network node have distinct effects reveals that this node is embedded within a network that possesses multiple, functionally distinct relationships among its distributed partners.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation modulates the brain's intrinsic activity in a frequency-dependent manner.

Actividad intr&#xED;nseca en el cerebro est&#xE1; organizado en redes. Aunque limitado por sus conexiones anat&#xF3;micas, las correlaciones funcionales entre los nodos de estas redes reorganizar de forma din&#xE1;mica. Organizaci&#xF3;n din&#xE1;mica implica que los acoplamientos entre los nodos de la red puede ser reconfigurado para apoyar las demandas de procesamiento. Para explorar estas reconfiguraciones, se combinaron estimulaci&#xF3;n magn&#xE9;tica transcraneal repetitiva (rTMS) y la resonancia magn&#xE9;tica funcional de conectividad (fcMRI) para modular la actividad cortical en un nodo de la red por defecto, y se evalu&#xF3; el efecto de esto sobre las correlaciones funcionales a lo largo de la red. Dos frecuencias diferentes de EMTr en el nodo predeterminado misma red (a la izquierda l&#xF3;bulo parietal posterior inferior, lpIPL) inducida por dos cambios diferentes topogr&#xE1;ficamente en la conectividad funcional. EMTr de alta frecuencia a la disminuci&#xF3;n de lpIPL correlaciones funcionales entre las corticales nodos de red por defecto, pero no entre estos nodos y la formaci&#xF3;n del hipocampo. Por el contrario, la EMTr de baja frecuencia a lpIPL no alter&#xF3; la conectividad entre los nodos de red por defecto cortical, pero aument&#xF3; las correlaciones funcionales entre lpIPL y la formaci&#xF3;n del hipocampo. Estos resultados sugieren que la red por defecto se compone de (al menos) dos subsistemas. En t&#xE9;rminos m&#xE1;s generales, la constataci&#xF3;n de que los reg&#xED;menes de dos rTMS de estimulaci&#xF3;n a la misma red de nodo predeterminado tener efectos diferentes revela que este nodo se inserta dentro de una red que cuenta con relaciones m&#xFA;ltiples, funcionalmente diferentes distribuidos entre sus socios.
