Nanospherical hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) with a functional mesochannel covered with thin-layer-dispersed cobalt oxide species was directly fabricated via a novel metal-assisted templating method (S(0)M(+)I(-)). In this special method, cobalt ions would be enriched on the surface of the pore wall by physicochemical interactions among the surfactant, cobalt ions and silica. Typically, a metallomicelle template (S(0)M(+)) formed from the coordinative assembly of metal cations (Co(2+), M(+)) with neutral surfactant dodecyl amine (DDA, S(0)) would match with negatively charged silicate oligomers (I(-)) by counter-ion interactions to assemble into the Co-modified HMS nanosphere. The metallization of DDA micelles and the role of cobalt ions in the assembly process can be demonstrated. Interestingly, the addition of amounts of cobalt apparently affects the size of the HMS nanosphere. Additionally, the coverage of CoO species on the mesochannel is increased with cobalt ions coordinated on the micelles. Finally, the functional Co-HMS with dispersed catalytic active phase and improved structure exhibits a special catalytic activity (yield of ca. 65%) for direct oxidation of phenol to p-benzoquinone with the assistance of a sulfate radical stimulated from cobalt in the presence of peroxymonosulfate.

BiOCl-SiO₂ KIT-6 composite materials with raspberry-like structures are facilely prepared under hydrothermal conditions. The mesoporous siliceous support of SiO₂ KIT-6-incorporated BiOCl with enlarged yet refined surface morphology characterized by physiochemical methods exhibits an improved electrochemical performance. A sensitive electrochemical detection method of cadmium concentration using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry was developed based on BiOCl-SiO₂ KIT-6 composite-modified glassy carbon electrodes, which displayed wide linear ranges of 0.5 to 10 μg/L and 10 to 300 μg/L and a detection limit of 65 ng/L. The sensitive, versatile and eco-friendly sensor was successfully applied for the determination of cadmium-spiked human blood samples.

Raspberry-Like Bismuth Oxychloride on Mesoporous Siliceous Support for Sensitive Electrochemical Stripping Analysis of Cadmium.

Spherical MCM-48 mesoporous sieve co-doped with vanadium and iron was successfully synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) techniques. Results indicated that the V-Fe-MCM-48 showed an ordered 3D cubic mesostructure with spherical morphology, narrow pore size distribution and high specific surface area. Most of vanadium and iron atoms existing as tetrahedral Vand Fespecies were co-doped into the silicate framework. The particle sizes of V-Fe-MCM-48 were smaller and the specific area was much higher than those of of V-MCM-48. Additionally, the synthesized V-Fe-MCM-48 exhibited improved hydrothermal stability compared with the pure MCM-48.

Spherical V-Fe-MCM-48: The Synthesis, Characterization and Hydrothermal Stability.

To tackle severe environmental pollution, a search for materials by economical and eco-friendly preparations is demanding for public health. In this study, a novel in situ method to form silver nanoparticles under mild conditions was developed using biomimetic reducing agents of polydopamine coated on the rodlike mesoporous silica of SBA-15. The synthesized SBA-15/polydopamine (PDA)/Ag nanocomposites were characterized by a combination of physicochemical and electrochemical methods. 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB) were used as models for the evaluation of the prepared nanocatalysts of SBA-15/PDA/Ag in which the composite exhibited enhanced catalytic performance toward degrading 4-NP in solution and MB on the membrane, respectively. Additionally, compared with that of solid core-shell SiO/PDA/Ag, tubular SBA-15/PDA/Ag showed the prolonged inhibitory effect on microbial growth as typified by Escherichia coli (60 h), Staphylococcus aureus (36 h), and Aspergillus fumigatus (60 h), which demonstrated efficient control of silver nanoparticles release from the mesopores. The constructed dual-functional SBA-15/PDA/Ag as the long-term antimicrobial agent and the catalyst of industrial products provides an integrated nanoplatform to deal with environmental concerns.
