A fundamentally new working principle into the field of self-powered heavy-metal-ion detection and removal using the triboelectrification effect is introduced. The as-developed tribo-nanosensors can selectively detect common heavy metal ions. The water-driven triboelectric nanogenerator is taken as a sustainable power source for heavy-metal-ion removal by recycling the kinetic energy from flowing wastewater.

Triboelectrification-Enabled Self-Powered Detection and Removal of Heavy Metal Ions in Wastewater.

Functional nanoparticles modified silica nanofibrous materials with good flexibility, a hierarchical mesoporous structure, and excellent durability would have broad applications in efficient removal of contaminants, yet have proven to be enormously challenging to construct. Herein, we reported a strategy for rational design and fabricating flexible, hierarchical mesoporous, and robust ZrO2 nanoparticle-embedded silica nanofibrous membranes (ZrO2/SiO2 NM) for phosphate removal by combining the chitosan dip-coating method with the electrospinning technique. Our approach allows ZrO2 nanoparticles to be in situ firmly and uniformly anchored onto SiO2 nanofibers to drastically enlarge the specific surface area and porosity of membranes. Therefore, the resultant ZrO2/SiO2 NM exhibited a prominent removal efficiency of 85% and excellent adsorption amount of 43.8 mg P g-1 membranes in 30 min toward phosphates. Furthermore, the removal performance toward different types of phosphates revealed that the resultant membranes also could be used to remove phosphates in detergent and fertilizer water samples. More importantly, the membranes with good flexibility could directly be taken out from solution after use without any post-treatment. Such a simple and intriguing approach for fabricating nanofibrous membranes may provide a new platform for constructing membranes with superb phosphate removal performance.

Flexible Hierarchical ZrO2 Nanoparticle-Embedded SiO2 Nanofibrous Membrane as a Versatile Tool for Efficient Removal of Phosphate.

Effective promotion of air filtration applications proposed for fibers requires their real nanoscale diameter, optimized pore structure, and high service strength; however, creating such filter medium has proved to be a tremendous challenge. This study first establishes a strategy to design and fabricate novel poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) nanofiber/nets (PMIA NF/N) air filter via electrospinning/netting. Our strategy results in generation of a bimodal structure including a scaffold of nanofibers and abundant two-dimensional ultrathin (~20 nm) nanonets to synchronously construct PMIA filters by combining solution optimization, humidity regulation, and additive inspiration. Benefiting from the structural features including the true nanoscale diameter, small pore size, high porosity, and nets bonding contributed by the widely distributed nanonets, our PMIA NF/N filter exhibits the integrated properties of superlight weight (0.365 g m-2), ultrathin thickness (~0.5 μm), and high tensile strength (72.8 MPa) for effective air filtration, achieving the ultra-low penetration air filter level of 99.999% and low pressure drop of 92 Pa for 300-500 nm particles by sieving mechanism. The successful synthesis of PMIA NF/N would not only provide a promising medium for particle filtration, but also develop a versatile platform for exploring the application of nanonets in structural enhancement, separation and purification.
