This study was conducted to understand whether patients with mild Alzheimer disease (AD) could use general or self-referential mental imagery to improve their recognition of visually presented words. Experiment 1 showed that, unlike healthy controls, patients generally did not benefit from either type of imagery. To help determine whether the patients' inability to benefit from mental imagery at encoding was due to poor memory or due to an impairment in mental imagery, participants performed 4 imagery tasks with varying imagery and cognitive demands. Experiment 2 showed that patients successfully performed basic visual imagery, but degraded semantic memory, coupled with visuospatial and executive functioning deficits, impaired their ability to perform more complex types of imagery. Given that patients with AD can perform basic mental imagery, our results suggest that episodic memory deficits likely prevent AD patients from storing or retrieving general mental images generated during encoding. Overall, the results of both experiments suggest that neurocognitive deficits do not allow patients with AD to perform complex mental imagery, which may be most beneficial to improving memory. However, our data also suggest that intact basic mental imagery and rehearsal could possibly be helpful if used in a rehabilitation multisession intervention approach.

Using Mental Imagery to Improve Memory in Patients With Alzheimer Disease: Trouble Generating or Remembering the Mind's Eye?

Diese Studie wurde durchgef&uuml;hrt, um zu verstehen, ob Patienten mit milden Alzheimer-Krankheit (AD) Allgemeine k&ouml;nnen oder selbstreferenzierende mentale Bilder zur Verbesserung ihrer Anerkennung der visuell W&ouml;rter dargestellt. Experiment ergab, dass im Gegensatz zu gesunden Kontrollgruppen, Patienten in der Regel 1 beide Arten von Bildmaterial nicht profitieren. Experiment 2 zeigte, dass Patienten erfolgreich grundlegende visuelle Vorstellung durchgef&uuml;hrt, sondern semantische Ged&auml;chtnis degradiert, gepaart mit visuospatial und executive funktionierende Defizite, beeintr&auml;chtigt ihre F&auml;higkeit, komplexe Typen von Bildern f&uuml;hren. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass Patienten mit AD grundlegende geistige Bilder durchf&uuml;hren k&ouml;nnen, zufolge unsere Ergebnisse episodische Ged&auml;chtnisl&uuml;cken wahrscheinlich AD-Patienten aus speichern oder Abrufen von allgemeine Vorstellungen erzeugt w&auml;hrend der Codierung verhindern. Die Ergebnisse der beiden Experimenten zufolge insgesamt neurokognitive Defizite nicht erlauben, Patienten mit AD, komplexe mentale Bilder von durchzuf&uuml;hren, die f&uuml;r das verbessern des Speichers am vorteilhaftesten sein kann. Jedoch wird in unsere Daten suggerieren, dass intakte grundlegende mentale Bilder und Probe vielleicht hilfreich, wenn bei einer Sanierung multisession Intervention verwendet sein k&ouml;nnte.

Mit Mental Imagery Ged&auml;chtnis bei Patienten mit Alzheimer-Krankheit zu verbessern: Probleme beim Generieren oder Erinnerung an das Auge?

Questo studio &egrave; stato condotto per capire se i pazienti con lieve malattia di Alzheimer (AD) potrebbero usare generale o autoreferenziale immagini mentali per migliorare il loro riconoscimento di visivamente presentato parole. Esperimento 1 ha dimostrato che, a differenza dei controlli sani, i pazienti in genere non hanno tratto beneficio da entrambi i tipi di immagini. Este estudio se realiz&#xF3; para comprender si los pacientes con insuficiencia renal leve la enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA) podr&#xED;a utilizar las im&#xE1;genes mentales en general o autorreferencial para mejorar su reconocimiento de las palabras presentadas visualmente. Experimento 1 muestran que, a diferencia de los controles sanos, los pacientes generalmente no se benefician de cualquier tipo de im&#xE1;genes. Para ayudar a determinar si la incapacidad de los pacientes se beneficien de las im&#xE1;genes mentales en la codificaci&#xF3;n se debi&#xF3; a la mala memoria o debido a un deterioro en las im&#xE1;genes mentales, los participantes realizaron 4 pruebas de im&#xE1;genes con im&#xE1;genes variadas y demandas cognitivas. Experimento 2 demostr&#xF3; que los pacientes a cabo con &#xE9;xito las im&#xE1;genes de Visual Basic, pero la memoria sem&#xE1;ntica degradados, junto con d&#xE9;ficits visuoespaciales y funciones ejecutivas, el deterioro de su capacidad para realizar los tipos m&#xE1;s complejos de las im&#xE1;genes. Teniendo en cuenta que los pacientes con EA pueden realizar im&#xE1;genes mentales de base, nuestros resultados sugieren que los d&#xE9;ficits de memoria epis&#xF3;dica es probable prevenir los pacientes con EA de almacenar o recuperar generales im&#xE1;genes mentales generadas durante la codificaci&#xF3;n. Objective: The picture superiority effect, better memory for pictures compared to words, has been found in young adults, healthy older adults, and, most recently, in patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. Although the picture superiority effect is widely found, there is still debate over what drives this effect. One main question is whether it is enhanced perceptual or conceptual information that leads to the advantage for pictures over words. In this experiment, we examined the picture superiority effect in healthy older adults and patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to better understand the role of gist-based conceptual processing. Method: We had participants study three exemplars of categories as either words or pictures. In the test phase, participants were again shown pictures or words and were asked to determine whether the item was in the same category as something they had studied earlier or whether it was from a new category. Results: We found that all participants demonstrated a robust picture superiority effect, better performance for pictures than for words. Conclusions: These results suggest that the gist-based conceptual processing of pictures is preserved in patients with MCI. While in healthy older adults preserved recollection for pictures could lead to the picture superiority effect, in patients with MCI it is most likely that the picture superiority effect is a result of spared conceptually based familiarity for pictures, perhaps combined with their intact ability to extract and use gist information. Methode: Wir hatten die Teilnehmer drei Exemplare der Kategorien als Worte oder Bilder zu studieren.
