We determined that graphene oxide reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 requires the Mtr respiratory pathway by analyzing a range of mutants lacking these proteins. Electron shuttling compounds increased the graphene oxide reduction rate 3- to 5-fold. These results may help facilitate the use of bacteria for large-scale graphene production.

Deciphering the electron transport pathway for graphene oxide reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.

We report the controlled synthesis of AlN/GaN multi-quantum well (MQW) radial nanowire heterostructures by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The structure consists of a single-crystal GaN nanowire core and an epitaxially grown (AlN/GaN)(m) (m = 3, 13) MQW shell. Optical excitation of individual MQW nanowires yielded strong, blue-shifted photoluminescence in the range 340-360 nm, with respect to the GaN near band-edge emission at 368.8 nm. Cathodoluminescence analysis on the cross-sectional MQW nanowire samples showed that the blue-shifted ultraviolet luminescence originated from the GaN quantum wells, while the defect-associated yellow luminescence was emitted from the GaN core. Computational simulation provided a quantitative analysis of the mini-band energies in the AlN/GaN superlattices and suggested the observed blue-shifted emission corresponds to the interband transitions between the second subbands of GaN, as a result of quantum confinement and strain effect in these AlN/GaN MQW nanowire structures.

Light-directed electrophoretic deposition: a new additive manufacturing technique for arbitrarily patterned 3D composites.

Constrained by large ohmic and radiation losses, plasmonic nanolasers operated at visible regime are usually achieved either with a high threshold (10(2)-10(4) MW cm(-2)) or at cryogenic temperatures (4-120 K). Particularly, the bending-back effect of surface plasmon (SP) dispersion at high energy makes the SP lasing below 450 nm more challenging. Here we demonstrate the first strong room temperature ultraviolet (~370 nm) SP polariton laser with an extremely low threshold (~3.5 MW cm(-2)). We find that a closed-contact planar semiconductor-insulator-metal interface greatly lessens the scattering loss, and more importantly, efficiently promotes the exciton-SP energy transfer thus furnishes adequate optical gain to compensate the loss. An excitation polarization-dependent lasing action is observed and interpreted with a microscopic energy-transfer process from excitons to SPs. Our work advances the fundamental understanding of hybrid plasmonic waveguide laser and provides a solution of realizing room temperature UV nanolasers for biological applications and information technologies. 

A room temperature low-threshold ultraviolet plasmonic nanolaser.

Programmable positioning of 2 μm polystyrene (PS) beads with single particle precision and location selective, "on-demand", particle deposition was demonstrated by utilizing patterned electrodes and electrophoretic deposition (EPD). An electrode with differently sized hole patterns, from 0.5 to 5 μm, was used to illustrate the discriminatory particle deposition events based on the voltage and particle-to-hole size ratio. With decreasing patterned hole size, a larger electric field was required for a particle deposition event to occur in that hole. For the 5 μm hole, particle deposition began to occur at 10 V/cm where as an electric field of 15 V/cm was required for particles to begin depositing in the 2 μm holes. The likelihood of particle depositions continued to increase for smaller sized holes as the electric field increased. Eventually, a monolayer of particles began to form at approximately 20 V/cm. In essence, a voltage threshold was found for each hole pattern of different sizes, allowing fine adjustments in pattern hole size and voltage to control when a particle deposition event took place, even with the patterns on the same electrode. This phenomenon opens a route toward controlled, multimaterial deposition and assembly onto substrates without repatterning of the electrode or complicated surface modification of the particles. An analytical approach using the theories for electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis found the former to be the dominating force for depositing a particle into a patterned hole. Ebeam lithography was used to pattern spherical holes in precise configurations onto electrode surfaces, where each hole accompanied a polystyrene (PS) particle placement and attachment during EPD. The versatility of e-beam lithography was utilized to create arbitrary pattern configurations to fabricate particle assemblies of limitless configurations, enabling fabrication of unique materials assemblies and interfaces.

On-demand and location selective particle assembly via electrophoretic deposition for fabricating structures with particle-to-particle precision.

Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional (2D) carbon material that offers a unique combination of low density, exceptional mechanical properties, thermal stability, large surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. Recent progress has resulted in macro-assemblies of graphene, such as bulk graphene aerogels for a variety of applications. However, these three-dimensional (3D) graphenes exhibit physicochemical property attenuation compared to their 2D building blocks because of one-fold composition and tortuous, stochastic porous networks. These limitations can be offset by developing a graphene composite material with an engineered porous architecture. Here, we report the fabrication of 3D periodic graphene composite aerogel microlattices for supercapacitor applications, via a 3D printing technique known as direct-ink writing. The key factor in developing these novel aerogels is creating an extrudable graphene oxide-based composite ink and modifying the 3D printing method to accommodate aerogel processing. The 3D-printed graphene composite aerogel (3D-GCA) electrodes are lightweight, highly conductive, and exhibit excellent electrochemical properties. In particular, the supercapacitors using these 3D-GCA electrodes with thicknesses on the order of millimeters display exceptional capacitive retention (ca. 90% from 0.5 to 10 A·g(-1)) and power densities (>4 kW·kg(-1)) that equal or exceed those of reported devices made with electrodes 10-100 times thinner. This work provides an example of how 3D-printed materials, such as graphene aerogels, can significantly expand the design space for fabricating high-performance and fully integrable energy storage devices optimized for a broad range of applications.

Supercapacitors Based on Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Graphene Aerogels with Periodic Macropores.

This communication reports a new method to purify copper nanowires with nearly 100% yield from undesired copper nanoparticle side-products formed during batch processes of copper nanowire synthesis. This simple separation method can yield large quantities of long, uniform, high-purity copper nanowires to meet the requirements of nanoelectronics applications as well as provide an avenue for purifying copper nanowires in the industrial scale synthesis of copper nanowires, a key step for commercialization and application of nanowires.

Prevailing commercialized cardiac platforms for in vitro drug development utilize planar microelectrode arrays to map action potentials, or impedance sensing to record contraction in real time, but cannot record both functions on the same chip with high spatial resolution. Here we report a novel cardiac platform that can record cardiac tissue adhesion, electrophysiology, and contractility on the same chip. The platform integrates two independent yet interpenetrating sensor arrays: a microelectrode array for field potential readouts and an interdigitated electrode array for impedance readouts. Together, these arrays provide real-time, non-invasive data acquisition of both cardiac electrophysiology and contractility under physiological conditions and under drug stimuli. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes were cultured as a model system, and used to validate the platform with an excitation-contraction decoupling chemical. Preliminary data using the platform to investigate the effect of the drug norepinephrine are combined with computational efforts. This platform provides a quantitative and predictive assay system that can potentially be used for comprehensive assessment of cardiac toxicity earlier in the drug discovery process.

Simultaneous electrical recording of cardiac electrophysiology and contraction on chip.

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon-based materials are emerging as promising electrode candidates for energy storage devices. In comparison to the 1D and 2D structures, 3D morphology offers new opportunities in rational design and synthesis of novel architectures tailor-made for promoting electrochemical performance. The capability of building hierarchical porous structures with 3D configuration can significantly advance the performance of energy storage devices by simultaneously enhancing the ion-accessible surface area and ion diffusion. This feature article presents an overview of recent progress in design, synthesis and implementation of 3D carbon-based materials as electrodes for electrochemical capacitors. Synthesis methodologies of four types of 3D carbon-based electrodes: 3D exfoliated carbon structures, 3D graphene scaffolds, 3D hierarchical porous carbon foams, as well as 3D architectures with periodic pores derived from direct ink writing, are thoroughly discussed and highlighted with selected experimental works. Finally, key opportunities and challenges in which different 3D carbons can significantly impact the energy storage and conversion communities will be provided.
