A C60-pyrrolidine derivative with a hydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic structure (2-{3,4-di{2-[2-(2-decyloxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy}}phenyl-3,4-fulleropyrrolidine, DTPF) has been synthesized and well-characterized. This compound could form stable nanospheres by simply injectingits tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution into water and then removing THF by purging gaseous nitrogen in sequence. Novel nanoassemblies of DTPF nanospheres and gold nanoparticles were obtained through in situ photoreduction of aqueous HAuCl4 in the presence of DTPF nanospheres, which were confirmed by UV-visible, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods. It is proposed that the interaction between the positively charged nitrogen atom and the gold nanoparticles is the main driving force for the formation of the nanoassemblies.

Self-assembly of gold nanoparticles on fullerene nanospheres.

The refractive indices of particles and dispersion medium are important parameters in many colloidal experiments using optical techniques, such as turbidity and light scattering measurements. These data are in general wavelength-dependent and may not be available at some wavelengths fitting to the experimental requirement. In this study we present a novel approach to inversely determine the refractive indices of particles and dispersion medium by examining the consistency of measured extinction cross sections of particles with their theoretical values using a series of trial values of the refractive indices. The colloidal suspension of polystyrene particles dispersed in water was used as an example to demonstrate how this approach works and the data obtained via such a method are compared with those reported in literature, showing a good agreement between both. Furthermore, the factors that affect the accuracy of measurements are discussed. We also present some data of the refractive indices of polystyrene over a range of wavelengths smaller than 400 nm that have been not reported in the available literature.

A novel inverse method for determining the refractive indices of medium and dispersed particles simultaneously by turbidity measurement.

Naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenes (PT), a novel class of inhibitors against glycogen phosphorylase (GP), hold promise for the treatment of type-2 diabetes and other diseases with disorders in glycogen metabolism. To identify novel and more potent GP inhibitors, the receptor-based comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity analysis (CoMSIA) approaches were performed to investigate the quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) among 106 PT analogues. The validated models demonstrated that the elongated or bulky substitutions in C17 position and/or C2, C3 positions are favorable. Then based on the structural information extracted from these models, 56 derivatives were synthesized and biochemically tested in this study. The IC50 value of the most potent compound P50 was found to be 1.1 μM.

Identification of pentacyclic triterpenes derivatives as potent inhibitors against glycogen phosphorylase based on 3D-QSAR studies.

The retrieval of snow grain size is one of the important research directions for cryosphere snow remote sensing. In the present study, we designed the measurement plan of different snow grain size by different snow layer. A SVC HR-1024 ground-based spectral radiometer was used for measuring the spectral property of different snow grain size in northern Xinjiang, China. At the same time, the snow grain size and shape were measured by a hand-loupe with scale. Then the DSPP method was used to calculate the equivalent snow grain size. Finally, the asymptotic radiative transfer (ART) theory was applied to retrieve the snow grain size from measured snow spectral reflectance of different snow layer by optimizing the inversion band and the snow grain size factor "b". The retrieved snow grain size was validated by the measured snow grain size from DSPP method. The results showed that the DSPP method is an effective means of measuring the equivalent snow grain size. However, there is a large deviation of the snow grain size sample in the same snow layer. It is necessary to improve the measurement method of the single snow grain size sample; The study showed that the near-infrared bands are the most effective selection for retrieval of snow grain size. The retrieval algorithm from ART is feasible. When the snow is dry, the authors optimize the inversion band and the snow grain size factor b in the Northern Xinjiang, China. The optimal band wavelength is 1.20 microm and b is 3.62.
