This study was done to evaluate the degradation and mineralization of formaldehyde (≈ 8000 mg/L) in an electro-Fenton process (EFP) in combination with biodegradation. In the first step, the influence of several important parameters including solution pH, current density, H(2)O(2) concentration, and reaction time were tested on the efficiency of the EFP in degradation and mineralization of formaldehyde in a concentrated solution. The optimum pH and current density was found to be around 10 and 8.5 mA/cm(2), respectively. The formaldehyde degradation in the EFP increased with an increased H(2)O(2) concentration. Under optimum pH and current density, the complete degradation and 51% mineralization of formaldehyde was attained in the EFP using a H(2)O(2) concentration of 10mM/min at a short reaction time of 6 min. The biodegradation of the effluent of EFP under optimum conditions (complete formaldehyde removal) was also tested. The results demonstrated that the concentration of the EFP effluent could be efficiently reduced in the bioreactor to below 50mg/L after a biodegradation time of 16d. Accordingly, results showed that EFP was a very efficient process for degradation and mineralization of a high concentration of formaldehyde so that its effluent could be efficiently post-treated with a biological process.

The investigation of degradation and mineralization of high concentrations of formaldehyde in an electro-Fenton process combined with the biodegradation.

Groundwater contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons was treated using a combined system of adsorption onto powdered expanded perlite (PEP) followed by the O3/H2O2 process. The pretreatment investigations indicated a high capacity for PEP to remove petroleum hydrocarbons from the contaminated water. An experimental total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) adsorption capacity of 275 mg/g PEP was obtained at the natural pH of water. The experimental data fit best with the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order adsorption model. The second phase of the experiment evaluated the performance of the O3/H2O2 process in the removal of residual TPH from pretreated water and compared the results with that of raw water. The O3/H202 process attained a maximum TPH removal rate for the pretreated water after 70 min, when 93% of the residual TPH in the effluent of the adsorption system was removed. Overall, the combination of adsorption onto PEP for 100 min and the subsequent treatment with the O3/H2O2 process for 70min eliminated over 99% of the TPH of highly petroleum-contaminated groundwater, with initial values of 162 mg/L. Therefore, we can conclude that the developed treatment system is an appropriate method of remediation for petroleum-contaminated waters.

Besides its key role in neural development, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is important for long-term potentiation and neurogenesis, which makes it a critical factor in learning and memory. Due to the important role of BDNF in synaptic function and plasticity, an in-house epigenetic library was screened against human neural progenitor cells (HNPCs) and WS1 human skin fibroblast cells using Cell-to-Ct assay kit to identify the small compounds capable of modulating the  expression. In addition to two well-known hydroxamic acid-based histone deacetylase inhibitors (hb-HDACis), SAHA and TSA, several structurally similar HDAC inhibitors including SB-939, PCI-24781 and JNJ-26481585 with even higher impact on  expression, were discovered in this study. Furthermore, by using well-developed immunohistochemistry assays, the selected compounds were also proved to have neurogenic potential improving the neurite outgrowth in HNPCs-derived neurons. In conclusion, we proved the neurogenic potential of several hb-HDACis, alongside their ability to enhance  expression, which by modulating the neurogenesis and/or compensating for neuronal loss, could be propitious for treatment of neurological disorders.
