We report on a waveguide composed of a cascade of gain-enabled quantum dots with subwavelength dimensions. Fabrication is demonstrated through DNA-mediated self-assembly and a two-layer molecular self-assembly process that enables rapid prototyping. The device, which is identified with fluorescence microscopy and tested by optical near field detection, allows optical signal transfer at a well-defined wavelength in flexible routing geometry, such as straight paths and 90 degrees bends. The structure serves as a critical building block for nanophotonic systems with high integration density.

We present cross-talk calculations for a subdiffraction nanophotonic waveguide that consists of a colloidal quantum dot (QD) array 10 nm in diameter and compare the results with conventional continuous dielectric waveguides, assuming the same 10 nm size as well as a 200 nm cutoff diameter for guided mode. We find that the QD cascade has much lower cross talk than 10 nm dielectric waveguides at an identical separation >30 nm. Moreover, results for 200 nm dielectric waveguides at a 280 nm gap are comparable with those of QD structures spaced 110 nm apart. Hence the proposed QD device is potentially superior to conventional waveguides in achieving lower cross talk in the subdiffraction regime and provides a new route to achieving high-density photonic integrated circuits.

Plasmonics, a rapidly emerging subdiscipline of nanophotonics, is aimed at exploiting surface plasmons for important applications, including sensing, waveguiding, and imaging. Parallel to these research efforts, technology yielding enhanced scattering and absorption of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) provides promising routes for trapping and manipulation of micro and nano scale particles, as well as biomolecules with low laser intensity due to high energy conversion efficiency under resonant excitation. In this paper, we show that the LSP-induced scattering field from a self-assembled gold nanoparticle array can be used to sustain trapping of single micron-sized particles with low laser intensity. Moreover, we demonstrate for the first time efficient localized concentration of sub-micron sized particles and DNAs of various sizes through photothermal effect of plasmonics.

Parallel zu dieser Forschungsanstrengungen, Technologie verbessert nachgeben, Streuung und Absorption von lokalisierten Oberfl&auml;chenplasmonen (LSPs) bietet vielversprechende Routen f&uuml;r &Uuml;berf&uuml;llung und Manipulation von Mikro- und Nano-Ma&szlig;stab-Partikel sowie Biomolek&uuml;le mit niedrigen Laserintensit&auml;t aufgrund hoher Energieeffizienz Konvertierung unter resonante Anregung. In diesem Beitrag zeigen wir, dass Feld induziert durch LSP Streuung von einem monomolekularen gold-Nanopartikel-Array verwendet werden kann, &Uuml;berf&uuml;llung der einzelnen Mikron Gr&ouml;&szlig;e Partikel mit niedriger Laserintensit&auml;t aufrechtzuerhalten. The effect is driven by a convective flow in the sample, caused by efficient heating of NPs with high absorption efficiencies. Several types of concentration behavior were observed and characterized. Control of optical power and initial particle density was found to be effective in determining the assembly process. VO(2) nanowires, carbon nanotube (CNT), and quantum dot (QD) electrode gap bridges were assembled with a variety of sizes and geometries to show the utility of the method for nano-assembly. Bridges were assembled from as many as thousands to as few as one NP and were found to form solid electrical contact between the electrodes, as verified by measuring the current--voltage (I-V) characteristic.

We propose and demonstrate a purely optical approach to trap and align particles using the interaction of polarized light with periodic nanostructures to generate enhanced trapping force. With a weakly focused laser beam, we observed efficient trapping and transportation of polystyrene beads with sizes ranging from 10 mum down to 190 nm as well as cancer cell nuclei. In addition, alignment of non-spherical dielectric particles to a 1-D periodic nanostructure was achieved with low laser intensity without attachment to birefringent crystals. Bacterial cells were trapped and aligned with incident optical intensity as low as 17 microW/microm(2).

We demonstrate solution-processed photodetectors composed of heavy-metal-free Si nano/micro particle composite. The colloidal Si particles are synthesized by electrochemical etching of Si wafers, followed by ultra-sonication to pulverize the porous surface. With alkyl ligand surface passivation through hydrosilylation reaction, the particles can form a stable colloidal suspension which exhibits bright photoluminescence under ultraviolet excitation and a broadband extinction spectrum due to enhanced scattering from the micro-size particles. The efficiency of the thin film photodetectors has been substantially improved by preventing oxidation of the particles during the etching process.

We model and demonstrate the behavior of two-dimensional (2D) self-assembled quantum dot (QD) sub-diffraction waveguides. By pumping the gain-enabled semiconductor nanoparticles and introducing a signal light, energy coupling of stimulated photons from the QDs enables light transmission along the waveguide. Monte Carlo simulation with randomized inter-dot separation reveals that the optical gain necessary for unity transfer is 3.1 Ã— 10(7)Â m(-1) for a 2D (2Â Âµm length by 500Â nm width) array compared to 11.6 Ã— 10(7)Â m(-1) for a 1D (2Â Âµm length) given 8Â nm diameter quantum dots. The theoretical results are borne out in experiments on 2D arrays by measurement of negligible crosstalk component with as little as 200Â nm waveguide separation and is indicative of near-field optical coupling behavior. The transmission loss for 500Â nm wide structures is determined to be close to 3Â dB/4Â Âµm, whereas that for 100Â nm width is 3Â dB/2.3Â Âµm. Accordingly, higher pump power and gain would be necessary on the narrower device to create similar throughput. Considering existing nanoscale propagation methods, which commonly use negative dielectric materials, our waveguide shows an improved loss characteristic with comparable or smaller dimensions. Thus, the application of QDs to nanophotonic waveguiding represents a promising path towards ultra-high density photonic integrated circuits.

Nos modelo y demostrar el comportamiento de dos dimensiones (2D) auto-ensambladas de puntos cu&#xE1;nticos (QD) de difracci&#xF3;n de sub-gu&#xED;as de onda. Mediante el bombeo de las nanopart&#xED;culas de semiconductores con capacidad de ganancia y la introducci&#xF3;n de un sem&#xE1;foro, el acoplamiento de energ&#xED;a de los fotones estimulados de los puntos cu&#xE1;nticos permite la transmisi&#xF3;n de luz a lo largo de la gu&#xED;a de onda. La simulaci&#xF3;n de Monte Carlo con el azar entre los puntos de separaci&#xF3;n pone de manifiesto que la ganancia &#xF3;ptica necesaria para la transferencia de la unidad es de 3,1 &#xD7; 10 (7) m (-1) para un 2D (longitud de 2 m de ancho por 500 nm) conjunto en comparaci&#xF3;n con 11,6 &#xD7; 10 (7 ) m (-1) para una 1D (2 m de longitud) da 8 nm de di&#xE1;metro puntos cu&#xE1;nticos. Los resultados te&#xF3;ricos se confirma en experimentos sobre matrices 2D mediante la medici&#xF3;n del componente de diafon&#xED;a insignificante con tan poco como 200 nm gu&#xED;a de ondas de separaci&#xF3;n y es indicativo de comportamiento de campo pr&#xF3;ximo de acoplamiento &#xF3;ptico. La p&#xE9;rdida de transmisi&#xF3;n de 500 nm de ancho estructuras se determina que es cerca de 3 dB / m 4, mientras que para un ancho de 100 nm es de 3 dB/2.3 micras. En consecuencia, una mayor potencia de la bomba y la ganancia ser&#xED;a necesario en el dispositivo m&#xE1;s estrecho para crear rendimiento similar. Teniendo en cuenta los actuales m&#xE9;todos de propagaci&#xF3;n a escala nanom&#xE9;trica, que com&#xFA;nmente utilizan los materiales diel&#xE9;ctricos negativos, nuestra gu&#xED;a de onda muestra una caracter&#xED;stica de la p&#xE9;rdida de la mejora de dimensiones comparables o m&#xE1;s peque&#xF1;o. As&#xED;, la aplicaci&#xF3;n de puntos cu&#xE1;nticos de gu&#xED;a de ondas nanofot&#xF3;nicos representa un camino prometedor hacia ultra-alta densidad circuitos integrados fot&#xF3;nicos.

ABSTRACT: While 32 nm lithography technology is on the horizon for integrated circuit (IC) fabrication, matching the pace for miniaturization with optics has been hampered by the diffraction limit. However, development of nanoscale components and guiding methods is burgeoning through advances in fabrication techniques and materials processing. As waveguiding presents the fundamental issue and cornerstone for ultra-high density photonic ICs, we examine the current state of methods in the field. Namely, plasmonic, metal slot and negative dielectric based waveguides as well as a few sub-micrometer techniques such as nanoribbons, high-index contrast and photonic crystals waveguides are investigated in terms of construction, transmission, and limitations. Furthermore, we discuss in detail quantum dot (QD) arrays as a gain-enabled and flexible means to transmit energy through straight paths and sharp bends. Modeling, fabrication and test results are provided and show that the QD waveguide may be effective as an alternate means to transfer light on sub-diffraction dimensions.

Comme guide d&#x26;#39;ondes pr&#xE9;sente la question fondamentale et pierre angulaire pour CI ultra-haute densit&#xE9; photonique, nous examinons l&#x26;#39;&#xE9;tat actuel des m&#xE9;thodes dans le domaine. Notamment, plasmonique, logement m&#xE9;tallique et guides d&#x26;#39;ondes di&#xE9;lectriques &#xE0; base de n&#xE9;gatifs ainsi que quelques sous-microm&#xE9;triques des techniques telles que nanorubans, les hauts indices de contraste et photoniques guides d&#x26;#39;ondes cristaux sont &#xE9;tudi&#xE9;es en termes de construction, la transmission, et des limitations. En outre, nous analysons en d&#xE9;tail points quantiques (QD) des tableaux comme un moyen de gain compatibles et flexible pour transmettre l&#x26;#39;&#xE9;nergie &#xE0; travers des chemins rectilignes et coudes pointus. Les r&#xE9;sultats de mod&#xE9;lisation, de fabrication et de test sont fournis et montrent que le guide d&#x26;#39;ondes QD peut &#xEA;tre efficace comme un autre moyen de transf&#xE9;rer la lumi&#xE8;re sur le sous-diffraction dimensions.

M&#xE9;thodes de guidage d&#x26;#39;ondes nanom&#xE9;triques

ABSTRACT: W&auml;hrend 32-nm-Lithographie-Technologie am Horizont f&uuml;r die Fertigung integrierter Schaltkreis (IC) ist, hat das Tempo zur Miniaturisierung mit Optik passend durch die Beugungsgrenze behindert. Allerdings ist sich Entwicklung von nanoskaligen Komponenten und leitende Methoden, Fortschritte bei den Fertigungstechniken und Materialien Verarbeitung anschwellenden. Wie Waveguiding das Grundproblem und Eckpfeiler f&uuml;r ultrahohe Dichte Photonische ICs pr&auml;sentiert, pr&uuml;fen wir den aktuellen Zustand der Methoden im Bereich. N&auml;mlich aufbauend plasmonic, Metall-Steckplatz und negative dielektrische Wellenleiter sowie einige Sub-micrometer Techniken wie Photonische Kristalle Wellenleiter, Nanoribbons und hohem Index Kontrast hinsichtlich Konstruktion, &Uuml;bertragung und Einschr&auml;nkungen werden untersucht. Dar&uuml;ber hinaus diskutieren wir im Detail Quantum Dot (QD) Arrays als Gewinn-f&auml;hige und flexible Mittel f&uuml;r die &Uuml;bertragung von Energie durch geraden Pfade und scharfe Kurven. Modellierung, Fertigung und Test-Ergebnisse werden bereitgestellt und zeigen, dass die QD-Waveguide wirksam sein kann, als Alternative bedeutet Licht auf Sub-diffraction Ma&szlig;e zu &uuml;bernehmen.

RESUMEN: Aunque la tecnolog&#xED;a de litograf&#xED;a 32 nm est&#xE1; en el horizonte de circuito integrado (IC) de fabricaci&#xF3;n, igualando el ritmo de la miniaturizaci&#xF3;n con la &#xF3;ptica se ha visto obstaculizada por el l&#xED;mite de difracci&#xF3;n. Sin embargo, el desarrollo de los componentes a nanoescala y los m&#xE9;todos de orientaci&#xF3;n est&#xE1; creciendo r&#xE1;pidamente gracias a los avances en las t&#xE9;cnicas de fabricaci&#xF3;n y de procesamiento de materiales. Como gu&#xED;a de ondas presenta el problema fundamental y piedra angular de la densidad de circuitos integrados fot&#xF3;nicos de ultra-alta, se examina el estado actual de los m&#xE9;todos en el campo. Es decir, plasm&#xF3;nica, ranura de metal y gu&#xED;as de onda diel&#xE9;ctricas a base de negativos, as&#xED; como unos pocos sub-microm&#xE9;tricas t&#xE9;cnicas como nanocintas, el contraste de alto &#xED;ndice y gu&#xED;as de onda cristales fot&#xF3;nicos son investigados en cuanto a la construcci&#xF3;n, la transmisi&#xF3;n y limitaciones. Por otra parte, se discute en detalle de puntos cu&#xE1;nticos (QD) matrices como un medio con capacidad de ganancia y flexible para transmitir energ&#xED;a a trav&#xE9;s de trayectorias rectas y curvas cerradas. Los resultados del modelado, fabricaci&#xF3;n y pruebas se proporcionan y demuestran que la gu&#xED;a de onda QD puede ser eficaz como un medio alternativo para transferir la luz sobre las dimensiones sub-difracci&#xF3;n.
