The proper control of cell expansion is vital to plant development. It is responsible for shaping individual cells and, together with cell division, it plays a lead role in shaping plant organs. Much of the underlying mechanism by which plant cells expand anisotropically is not understood. We are taking a genetic approach to cell expansion by isolating mutants that affect the branching pattern of Arabidopsis trichomes. Here we report the identification of four new loci that control trichome morphogenesis. These loci were named the IRREGULAR TRICHOME BRANCH (ITB) loci because of the deleterious effects on branch position and length in the mutants. Our analysis of branch expansion in itb mutants shows that the ITB genes act as positive regulators of branch elongation, and that the branch position defects are caused by altered expansion of the trichome stalk. The itb mutations display synergistic effects in double mutant combinations with certain branch number mutations, suggesting that the ITB genes also play key roles in branch initiation. These results demonstrate that the ITB genes are key regulators of anisotropic cell expansion in trichomes.

Le contr&#xF4;le ad&#xE9;quat de l&#x26;#39;expansion des cellules est essentielle pour le d&#xE9;veloppement des plantes. Il est responsable de la mise en forme des cellules individuelles et, en collaboration avec la division cellulaire, il joue un r&#xF4;le de premier plan dans l&#x26;#39;&#xE9;laboration organes de la plante. Une grande partie du m&#xE9;canisme sous-jacent par lequel les cellules v&#xE9;g&#xE9;tales &#xE9;largir anisotrope n&#x26;#39;est pas comprise. Nous adoptons une approche g&#xE9;n&#xE9;tique de l&#x26;#39;expansion des cellules par isoler des mutants qui affectent le mode de ramification de trichomes d&#x26;#39;Arabidopsis. Nous rapportons ici l&#x26;#39;identification de quatre nouveaux loci que la morphogen&#xE8;se des trichomes de contr&#xF4;le. Ces loci ont &#xE9;t&#xE9; nomm&#xE9;s les IRREGULIERS trichome DIRECTION (ITB) loci en raison des effets d&#xE9;l&#xE9;t&#xE8;res sur la position des branches et la longueur chez les mutants. Notre analyse de dilatation dans des mutants branche ITB montre que les g&#xE8;nes ITB agir comme r&#xE9;gulateurs positifs d&#x26;#39;allongement branche, et que les d&#xE9;fauts de position de d&#xE9;rivation sont caus&#xE9;s par la dilatation de la tige alt&#xE9;r&#xE9;e trichomes. Les mutations ITB afficher des effets synergiques en double combinaisons de mutants avec certaines mutations num&#xE9;ro de la succursale, ce qui sugg&#xE8;re que les g&#xE8;nes jouent &#xE9;galement un r&#xF4;le ITB cl&#xE9;s de l&#x26;#39;initiation branche. Il corretto controllo dell&#39;espansione delle cellule &egrave; di vitale importanza per lo sviluppo di pianta. &Egrave; responsabile per modellare singole celle e, insieme con la divisione delle cellule, svolge un ruolo di piombo nel plasmare organi vegetali. Gran parte del meccanismo sottostante da cui le cellule vegetali espandere anisotropically non &egrave; compreso. Stiamo prendendo un approccio genetico all&#39;espansione della cella di isolamento di mutanti che influenzano il modello di ramificazione di Arabidopsis tricomi. Qui riportiamo l&#39;identificazione di quattro nuovi loci che controllano la morfogenesi di tricomi. Questi loci sono stati nominati i loci irregolare TRICHOME BRANCH (ITB) a causa degli effetti deleteri sul ramo posizione e la lunghezza i mutanti. La nostra analisi di espansione ramo itb mutanti dimostra che i geni ITB agiscono come regolatori positivi dell&#39;allungamento del ramo, e che i difetti di posizione del ramo sono causati da alterata espansione dello stelo tricomi. Estamos tomando un enfoque gen&#xE9;tico para la expansi&#xF3;n de c&#xE9;lulas mediante el aislamiento de mutantes que afectan el patr&#xF3;n de ramificaci&#xF3;n de tricomas de Arabidopsis. Floral transition is a critical and strictly regulated developmental process in plants. Mutations in Arabidopsis LIKE HETEROCHROMATIN PROTEIN 1 (AtLHP1)/TERMINAL FLOWER 2 (TFL2) result in early and terminal flowers. Little is known about the gene expression, function and evolution of plant LHP1 homologs, except for Arabidopsis LHP1. In this study, the conservation and divergence of plant LHP1 protein sequences was analyzed by sequence alignments and phylogeny. LHP1 expression patterns were compared among taxa that occupy pivotal phylogenetic positions. Several relatively conserved new motifs/regions were identified among LHP1 homologs. Phylogeny of plant LHP1 proteins agreed with established angiosperm relationships. In situ hybridization unveiled conserved expression of plant LHP1 in the axillary bud/tiller, vascular bundles, developing stamens, and carpels. Unlike AtLHP1, cucumber CsLHP1-2, sugarcane SoLHP1 and maize ZmLHP1, rice OsLHP1 is not expressed in the shoot apical meristem (SAM) and the OsLHP1 transcript level is consistently low in shoots. "Unequal crossover" might have contributed to the divergence in the N-terminal and hinge region lengths of LHP1 homologs. We propose an "insertion-deletion" model for soybean (Glycine max L.) GmLHP1s evolution. Plant LHP1 homologs are more conserved than previously expected, and may favor vegetative meristem identity and primordia formation. OsLHP1 may not function in rice SAM during floral induction.
