Attention is a cognitive selection mechanism that allocates the limited processing resources of the brain to the sensory streams most relevant to our immediate goals, thereby enhancing responsiveness and behavioral performance. The underlying neural mechanisms of orienting attention are distributed across a widespread cortical network. While aspects of this network have been extensively studied, details about the electrophysiological dynamics of this network are scarce. In this study, we investigated attentional networks using electrocorticographic (ECoG) recordings from the surface of the brain, which combine broad spatial coverage with high temporal resolution, in five human subjects. ECoG was recorded when subjects covertly attended to a spatial location and responded to contrast changes in the presence of distractors in a modified Posner cueing task. ECoG amplitudes in the alpha, beta, and gamma bands identified neural changes associated with covert attention and motor preparation/execution in the different stages of the task. The results show that attentional engagement was primarily associated with ECoG activity in the visual, prefrontal, premotor, and parietal cortices. Motor preparation/execution was associated with ECoG activity in premotor/sensorimotor cortices. In summary, our results illustrate rich and distributed cortical dynamics that are associated with orienting attention and the subsequent motor preparation and execution. These findings are largely consistent with and expand on primate studies using intracortical recordings and human functional neuroimaging studies.

Neural correlates of visual-spatial attention in electrocorticographic signals in humans.

L&#39;attention est un m&eacute;canisme de s&eacute;lection cognitive qui alloue les ressources de traitement limit&eacute;e du cerveau aux flux sensoriel plus pertinentes &agrave; nos objectifs imm&eacute;diats, ainsi, am&eacute;liore la r&eacute;activit&eacute; et la performance comportementale. Les m&eacute;canismes neurones sous-jacents d&#39;orienter l&#39;attention sont r&eacute;partis sur un vaste r&eacute;seau cortical. Tandis que les aspects de ce r&eacute;seau ont &eacute;t&eacute; largement &eacute;tudi&eacute;es, d&eacute;tails sur la dynamique &eacute;lectrophysiologique de ce r&eacute;seau sont rares. Moteur pr&eacute;paration/ex&eacute;cution &eacute;tait li&eacute;e &agrave; l&#39;activit&eacute; ECoG dans cortex pr&eacute;-motrices/sensorimotrice. En r&eacute;sum&eacute;, nos r&eacute;sultats illustrent la dynamique corticale riche et distribu&eacute;e qui sont associ&eacute;e &agrave; orienter l&#39;attention et la pr&eacute;paration moteur ult&eacute;rieure et l&#39;ex&eacute;cution. Ces r&eacute;sultats concordent largement avec et &eacute;tendre sur les &eacute;tudes de primate en utilisant des enregistrements intracorticales et humaine de neuro-imagerie fonctionnelle.

Neural correlates of attention visuelle spatiale en signaux d&#39;electrocorticographic chez les humains.

Aufmerksamkeit ist eine kognitive Auswahlmechanismus, der die begrenzten Verarbeitungsressourcen des Gehirns in der sensorischen Streams f&uuml;r unsere unmittelbaren Ziele, relevantesten und damit Verbesserung der Reaktionsf&auml;higkeit und verhaltensbasierte Leistung reserviert. Die zugrunde liegenden neuronalen Mechanismen der Orientierung Aufmerksamkeit sind in einem weit verbreiteten kortikale Netzwerk verteilt. W&auml;hrend Aspekte dieses Netzes ausgiebig studiert haben, sind Informationen &uuml;ber die elektrophysiologische Dynamik dieses Netzes knapp. In dieser Studie untersuchten wir syn&auml;sthetischen Netzwerke mit Electrocorticographic (ECoG) Aufnahmen von der Oberfl&auml;che des Gehirns, die gro&szlig;e r&auml;umliche Abdeckung mit hoher zeitlicher Aufl&ouml;sung zu kombinieren, in f&uuml;nf Testpersonen. ECoG wurde aufgenommen, als Subjekte heimlich bis eine r&auml;umliche Lage besuchte und auf Kontrast &Auml;nderungen in Anwesenheit von Ablenkungen in einer ver&auml;nderten Posner-Cueing-Aufgabe reagierte. ECoG Amplituden in den Alpha-, Beta- und Gamma-Bands identifiziert neuronale Ver&auml;nderungen verdeckte Aufmerksamkeit und Vorbereitung/Motorausf&uuml;hrung in den verschiedenen Phasen der Aufgabe zugeordnet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die syn&auml;sthetischen Engagement in erster Linie von ECoG-Aktivit&auml;t in der visuellen, pr&auml;frontalen pr&auml;motorischen und parietalen Cortices zugeordnet wurde. Vorbereitung/Motorausf&uuml;hrung war ECoG Aktivit&auml;t in Premotor/sensomotorischen Cortices zugeordnet. Zusammenfassend l&auml;sst sich sagen zeigen unsere Ergebnisse reichen und verteilte kortikale Dynamik, die Orientierung, Aufmerksamkeit und die nachfolgenden motor Vorbereitung und Durchf&uuml;hrung zugeordnet sind. Diese Erkenntnisse sind weitgehend mit und Primas Studien mit intrakortikale Aufnahmen und menschlichen funktionelle Neuroimaging Studien erweitern.

Neural korreliert der Visual-r&auml;umliche Aufmerksamkeit in Electrocorticographic Signale beim Menschen.

Attenzione &egrave; un meccanismo di selezione conoscitivo che alloca le risorse di elaborazione limitate del cervello per i flussi sensoriali pi&ugrave; pertinenti ai nostri obiettivi immediati, quindi migliorare reattivit&agrave; e prestazioni comportamentali. I meccanismi neurali sottostanti di orientare l&#39;attenzione sono distribuiti attraverso una rete capillare corticale. Mentre gli aspetti di questa rete sono state ampiamente studiati, dettagli circa le dinamiche elettrofisiologiche di questa rete sono scarse. In questo studio, abbiamo studiato reti attenzione utilizzando registrazioni electrocorticographic (ECoG) dalla superficie del cervello, che combinano un&#39;ampia copertura territoriale con alta risoluzione temporale, in cinque soggetti umani. ECoG &egrave; stato registrato quando soggetti segretamente ha partecipato a una localizzazione spaziale e risposero alle modifiche di contrasto in presenza di distrattori in un&#39;attivit&agrave; di ripasso Posner modificato. ECoG ampiezze nelle bande di alfa, beta e gamma identificato neurale cambiamenti associati con attenzione covert e motore preparazione o esecuzione delle diverse fasi dell&#39;attivit&agrave;. I risultati mostrano che impegno attenzione era principalmente associato ECoG attivit&agrave; nelle cortecce visive, prefrontale, premotoria e parietale. Motore preparazione/esecuzione era associato ECoG attivit&agrave; in premotor/sensomotorio cortecce. In sintesi, i nostri risultati illustrano dinamica corticale ricco e distribuite che &egrave; associati a orientare l&#39;attenzione e la successiva preparazione motore e l&#39;esecuzione. Questi risultati sono ampiamente coerenti con ed espandere su studi di primate utilizzando registrazioni intracorticali e neuroimaging funzionale umano.

Atenci&oacute;n es un mecanismo de selecci&oacute;n cognitiva que asigna los recursos de procesamiento limitada del cerebro a los arroyos sensoriales m&aacute;s relevantes a nuestros objetivos inmediatos, de tal modo aumento de la respuesta y el rendimiento conductual. Los mecanismos neuronales subyacentes de orientar la atenci&oacute;n se distribuyen en una amplia red cortical. Mientras que los aspectos de esta red se han estudiado ampliamente, detalles sobre la din&aacute;mica electrofisiol&oacute;gica de esta red son escasos. En este estudio, investigamos las redes atencionales usando grabaciones de electrocorticogr&aacute;fica (ECoG) de la superficie del cerebro, que combinan amplia cobertura espacial con alta resoluci&oacute;n temporal, en las cinco personas. ECoG fue grabado cuando sujetos secretamente asistieron a una ubicaci&oacute;n espacial y respondieron a los cambios de contraste en la presencia de elementos interactivos en una tarea de localizaci&oacute;n de Posner modificado. ECoG amplitudes en las bandas de alfa, beta y gamma identifican cambios neuronales asociados con atenci&oacute;n encubierta y motor preparaci&oacute;n/ejecuci&oacute;n en las diferentes etapas de la tarea. Los resultados muestran que compromiso atencional se asocia sobre todo a la actividad de la ECoG en las cortezas visuales, prefrontales, premotora y parietales. Preparaci&oacute;n motor/ejecuci&oacute;n se asoci&oacute; con ECoG actividad en cortezas premotor/sensoriomotora. En Resumen, nuestros resultados ilustran din&aacute;mica cortical rica y distribuida que se asocian a orientar la atenci&oacute;n y la posterior preparaci&oacute;n motor y ejecuci&oacute;n. Estos resultados concuerdan en gran medida con y ampl&iacute;an estudios en primates utilizando grabaciones intracortical y estudios de neuroimagen funcional humana.
